Overwatch won awards. Lol what?

Characters:
Overwatch - 22
GW2 - 7 zombies with 51 variants total
7 plants with 51 variants total so 102 options

Maps:
Overwatch - 14
Gw2 - 17

Game modes
Overwatch - 5 (including the random special events they put in)
Gw2 - 9 (including the free roam)

I see no reason why GW2 didn't snatch those awards right from Overwatch since it's all around a better game from top to bottom. Popularity > Quality when it comes to game awards. Remember this one. Just wanted to give props do the devs for setting a standard that "Game of the year" couldn't match. u da real goty. (plus there are a few games I could name at the top of my head that deserved goty instead of overwatch)

  • Unfortunately, GW2 isn't taken too seriously by shooter fans. It's too bad considering the accessibility + depth the game offers.

I made a post about a month ago saying I think GW2 took the series in the wrong direction. Reasoning is that the game is just too goofy in it's characters, customizations, and maps. We literally have superheroes and pirates fighting in what is supposed to be "warfare". It just doesn't really fit. Then, the maps...

Zen Peak, Time Park, Great White North, Lunar Landing, Sandy Sands... I've said it before, but some of these maps feel like they were ripped straight from Adventure Time. I understand that GW2 is supposed to be a fun-loving "doesn't take itself too seriously" type of game world, but by doing that you really aren't going to sell any outsider on the fact that it's a game about warfare.

I know this isn't PopCap's desire for the series' direction... But if Garden Wacky 2 would have adopted a more serious art style, character choices, and maps, I feel the game would have felt much more epic & deserving of the warfare title, and the game would have been taken much more seriously by outsiders and potential buyers.

You can have a serious tone and have Plants and Zombies fighting in all out war as well. It's ironic! And gave the original GW a lot of charm the sequel doesn't have.

I'll link it again... The initial reveal for the original Garden Warfare. Pay attention to the art style, it's much more grounded and pseudo-realistic. It's doesn't go overboard with the goofy factor, and all the character classes look somewhat plausible for a warfare type game.

Final note, Frostbite could be utilized better. After seeing what Need for Speed, Star Wars Battlefront, and Battlefield 1 have done with the engine, there really isn't any reason why the GW series couldn't look on par with those games.

Hopefully Garden Wacky 2 is just a misstep for the series, and GW3 will carry a more warfare-oriented tone with classes and maps to fit that tone. Well... If they want to draw in a larger audience and be taken more seriously... Then they certainly should.

Maybe then they'll actually be considered for awards!

Yes, and there is no reason this series couldn't have more adults playing. As it stands, it's not taken seriously by anyone that doesn't already play.

Overwatch feels like the better game IMO, since they're more focused on overall game balance and fine-tuning the experience to be enjoyable by everyone.
GW2, on the other hand, took two years and a sequel to fix a peashooter variant that was really not good. All the while buffing other characters that are hurting the game experience.
GW2's gamemodes don't really get that much attention, since all anyone ever plays is Turf Takeover anyways, and a more casual player, be them child or adult, would tire of that eventually. They would either start playing offline with bots, or quit altogether.
Point being, Quantity ≠ Quality. You could fill your game with enough classes and gamemodes to fill a football stadium, but that means nothing unless player retention and overall balance are kept in check.

EDIT: A bit of an afterthought, but I agree with the point @Jetset575 made about GW2 being too wacky. GW2 took all the legitimate, yet tounge-in-cheek elements of the first game and scrapped it for more goofy content. The selection of base game cosmetics reflect that heavily. Goofy hats and accessories aren't bad in moderation, but... That's ALL there is.

I agree that quality and quantity are not the same, but I also think that more content is better than less. Overwatch may be better balanced, but I got quickly tired of it. There's just not enough to do. I'm inclined to think PvZ GW2 is my GotY, but I certainly don't expect many to agree with me. Truth is, 2016 was a really great year for games.
