How do you get the update?  There are no update in my queue and no messages in my mailbox in the game.

The update came a few weeks ago so if you've been playing lately, you likely downloaded the updated already.

Just go to the Community Portal (in Town Hall in your backyard) and you'll find the events active on the respective dates.
