Poll Report

So I made a poll on Reddit, asking people if they wanted the next PvZ shooter to have variants like GW1/GW2, new characters like BfN does instead, or if they don't have a preference between the 2, they just want a variety of characters to play.

The poll has a ways to go yet but currently, variants are winning at 90 votes, more brand new characters instead of variants is at 21, and either is at 64.

I voted either as while I do like variants, and especially for stuff like the different imp mechs more than adding fire damage or ice effects, the idea of new characters has a lot of appeal of as well. Of course, trying to keep up with how many variants we're used too from the GW games by making brand new characters with new models, animations, 3 new abilities, and so on, is a lot of work, and BfN only gave us the wizard (I don't count the swarm characters as they're filler and I don't want to see them back).

I knew a lot of people were unhappy with the lack of variants, and I was leery of it as well. Had they been able to give us more characters in the time the game was being updated, I think things could have gone better for the idea. Making brand new characters is a ton of work, so it's unrealistic to expect something like 1 per month or something like that, but 1 in a year is far too slow, and likely is part of why that option is doing so poorly.

  • Final results:

    • 107 voted for variants
    • 26 voted for new characters
    • 75 voted either

While a large chunk voted for either, the majority want to return to the variants route. The biggest thing I saw from votes and comments is that people want a lot of variety more than anything else, that's where I stand as well.

While I really enjoyed variants in GW2 and at first was disappointed by the removal of variants in BFN, I had gotten used to it and had found it easier to choose which characters I wanted to play and at which times in BFN. That said, I would really like to see new variants in a new shooter as well as keeping all the characters that they had in BFN. If so, though, they would have to tweak characters like Snapdragon and Electric Slide if they were to add variants (because they are already technically elemental variants).

Honestly, either option has their advantages.

  • That's interesting @Iron_Guard8, and also a great idea. Hopefully the powers that be will get to hear of your poll and initiate planning for a GW3.

As regards variants the great advantage of incorporating them in the game to my mind, is that apart from variety, they add scope and flexibility when in either defense or attack.

For example when countering Super Brainz there is a choice between Chomper when burrowing, Colonel Corn and two or three of the Citrons. However when encountering Toxic Brainz in Legendary mode, Colonel Corn is useless whereas I find it too difficult to catch him when burrowing and use Frozen Citron instead. He hasn't a chance and he's a goner every time........for the most part.

@PerniciousPea I also agree that they should bring back variants, but the thing is would they keep certain characters,or put them all away.(not including snappy boi or electric slide).
  • @CraZjaM Not that I have heard of any. Personally doubt it very much though, as I get the impression that the Garden Warfare series has been dropped permanently.
