That's why I ask everyone else playing in the match to report the cheater too. If you get 6-7 people all reporting the same player, then yeah they will get banned. And not just from PvZ but risk their whole account being suspended.
A couple of weeks ago, I was in a PvZ2 match and out of no where another player sent me a message calling me a very disgusting word. I reported them, and 3 days later MS thanked me for the report and informed me this person was banned. So reporting does work!
While the exploit does need to be patched you can counter it through the use of the Gnomish Perpective hat if you actually have it available to you; it won't be fooled by the glitch and will still display the cheating player as an enemy.
I haven't encountered this all that much on PS4 and the couple of times I did I either changed lobbies or put the on Gnomish Perspective.
One more subtle form of cheating I've noticed is players on the opposite team sending you Friend requests hoping you'll add them right away because then they can track your movements on the map better because the game singles out your Friends a little more distinctly.

Spunkybell, sadly I think Ur gonna be wearing that hat for the rest of this games'lifecycle, cos popcap have known about this glitch forever. ☹️
I think the reason people are starting to crab about this now is cos it used to be a somewhat rare occurrence that you'd encounter someone doing the team switch glitch and now it truly is rampant. Last night I played four games of gnome bomb on ps4 and three of those four lobbies had team glitches in it, with the worst being the first lobby I joined ,which had a team of four scientists playing on the plants side.
