Ok so from what I gather is they were playing with you on your console, right? By doing that they will get any gifts you have received in the past.

Same thing here. I bought the game about a month ago and was (just a day before today) and was grinding coins for Breakfast Brainz and noticed the "1" above the vending machine in the zombie base. I checked and the game said I had a gift, so I looked. It was a plant Phenomenal Pack, and I got the Super Rare Vampire Sunflower. This made me remember: 2 weeks into owning the game I had 2 days in a row where I got 2 zombie Phenomenals and a plant one as well for no reason. No quests, no achievements. I mean, it's nice I guess.
