Would you pay 20$ to go see the next big movie in a theater? you know that 20$ will last you 2 hours and then its over. I prefer to give 20$ to pop cap for new content that I can enjoy for days and days.
It's all a manner of perspective.
Also, the quests are nice to play, but I come back to this game every single day to play online vs other people. That's the juice of any CCG/TCG.

I agree with Borisso in that it's definitely a matter of perspective, but I also believe that there are certainly more engaging ways to make a holiday event for the players.
Maybe they just don't have the infrastructure to do anything more than just sell the cards for cash, but I think that holding actual tournaments and giving the cards to the winners would be much more exciting.
I think the ideal way for an event in PvZ would be something like this:
- Have 2 cards: a higher rarity one and an uncommon one.
- Give one copy of the uncommon card away for a simple task, for example, a special quest. This is important because gamers have become acustumed to getting free stuff during events and get all grumpy when they don't get them.
- Give the higher rarity card as a prize for people doing well in a 4 round constructed tournament with an entry cost.
- Also, create a cash only sale bundle with both cards for people wanting to just spend money to get the cards.
- Finally, for those unable to win tournaments but that can grind, create a high cost gem bundle that allows people who saved up gems to get the card
To account for people worried about the competitive nature of the game, indicate that these cards will NOT be allowed in standard tournaments (if they exist in the future) or that the cards will eventually be available as part of some future expansion or that there is some other standard way to obtain them so that people don't complain about it being unfair.

What new content are you enjoying for $20?
Did you pay $20 to get new game modes the rest of us don't have access to?
