You will notice a difference, but not major. You don't need the upgrades to be a beast.
Do not try to land direct hits, unless you're facing someone one on one or see zombies in a fixed position. Don't focus on direct shots due to your limited ammo. Also, missed direct shots will also negate your spore damage. Use direct shots as a last resort or one on one encounters
Aim for the ground. Use the spores. Damage stacks and enemies will be unaware where it's coming from. See a group of zombies? Lay a dark flower next to you and use your heal beam on the dark flower. Keep shooting at the ground where they stand. Shoot as fast as you can. You can take out several zombies his way.
