Re: Cannot import GW1 characters

So I just got this game for my family because it was on sale for a ridiculously low price. We loved the first one and this one as well. Though it seems that I can't import my characters which I was told I could. I spoke with a EA csr named Ron who was really nice, sort of helpful he had no definitive answers. Will I ever get the chance to import the characters obtained from PvZ1????? I love the dolphin gun!!!!!!!

Ron was either giving you a runaround, or he doesn't even know what he's talking about.  I've had similar experience with the help desk.

February 28 was a hard limit for transferring characters from GW1 to GW2.  This has been known for quite a long time.  If the help desk people don't know that, then I'm gobsmacked.

You can get the marine biologist agin, but you'll need to get him through sticker packs.

  • As stated by pandareno1999 due to technical limitations the ability to import your characters from GW1 to GW2 has ended.

Luckily all of the characters which you had in GW1 are already in GW2; the character import was just a short cut to unlocking them immediately if you happened to have them from the first game.

Now that character importation is no longer possible you will need to unlock them the hard way by reassembling them from pieces found in Sticker Packs just like you did the first time.

Also, unfortunately, based on accounts written in these forums the customer service representatives at EA appear to be generally unfamiliar with the exact details of the games which seems to often result in somewhat confusing or sometimes inaccurate responses from them.

Also, please remember folks that you can still unlock your GW1 characters in GW2, you just don't get them instantly unlocked as you would with a transfer. With a little playtime you'll have your favorite characters unlocked again. I can assure you that GW2 is worth the time, if you enjoyed the first game I'm sure you'll enjoy unlocking them again. While it might be an inconvenience unlocking them twice, the game is incredibly fun and with the deals you got on it, I think it would be a shame to drop the game due to this unfortunate misunderstanding!

I'm wondering if perhaps they forgot to remove the language about character imports from the ad copy for the game to reflect the deadline.  Similar issues were brought up by several players who were accidentally misled to believe that the PC version would have online split screen.

It has been known for a long time?? Who are you taking too... parents and children's don't know that or newcomers to the game.. it should say it out side the box on gw1 since they still sell it ... to warn parents.  Speak for your self a lot of kids my son plays with want to buy gw1 to get the sombrero chili boom and other minor things you can not get via sticker..

Well this stinks. This is one of the main reason I bought the game.

Yeah also upset about this! 😡Just bought the game because of the free play weekend. I get up to the mailbox and one of the options listed In the tips is to import previous characters from the first game. Then you go through everything and the option to do so is no longer there. Sounds like false advertisement to me. Glad I only spent $16 on the game because I doubt I'll even play it now. Looks like you only get a general response on here anyway. Technical issues so they can't do it now.?!?What a joke!! If the option is there it should always be there. Period.

I wish companies didn't have to be so freaking careful about what they say nowadays. The slightest misstep could lead to a lawsuit. So, when things like this happen the company won't make an official statement. (Better to say nothing than get sued or end up causing bad PR. See Yooka Laylee.) But, of course, by making no statement the customers just get frustrated at the problem and the lack of acknowledgement from the company.

So the rumor goes, the reason for this is server performance drops due to the service. Though, I have a very hard time believing the game was allowed to run below optimal performance in its first year. (You know, when people decide if a game is good or not.) Either way, if this is the case then there is no true excuse to end the service. Its simple, for 1-2 days per month have a preadvertised period. (Through in game mail) Offer the service during this window, preferably not overlapping any portals, community challenges, rux, etc. This means everyone can use the service and will be warned when it is coming. If you miss one month you can just do it next month. The loss of performance (if it is really that significant) will only occur for a short time and still resolve all of this frustration.

Now, tin foil hat time. I personally believe the decision came from above due to the additional costs to run such a program continuously. This is only a hunch, I have no definitive proof of this. But, given the revenue that can be gained from GW1 it would seem like a strange business move to cut the transfer completely. Of course, without access to hard numbers this is only a guess. Maybe GW1 is far less played than my estimates. If it was truly technical issues and they really wanted to continue it they could find a solution. People don't often fix what they don't see as broken. /time foil hat time

So I have like 1000 hours in the 1st game finally found out about the 2nd game from my kids and bought it for them after playing the trial because the game said we could import everything from the 1st game.  Then come to  find out the game actually wont let us because we missed the deadline to do so? Then why does your trial version talk about importing everything from pvzgw1 still? This was the reason I decided to buy it for them because they already had so much unlocked. It will take 1000 times longer than the 1st game to unlock everything and they are stuck with basic characters with no upgraded abilities vs fully upgraded other players who have huge advantage over them online. And no one ever plays the welcome mat version ever.

How do we get ability upgrades anyway? Haven't found a single one spending like 3 million coins. Used to be in the sticker packs to change things like type of bomb you use or heal station etc.

There are two types of upgrades. Stats upgrades like weapon ammo, HP, reload time and so on. These used to be in sticker packs in GW1 but are now earned for ranking up a variant. (Sadly, they are variant specific, so you have to unlock addition HP on Basic Sunflower and Fire Sunflower for example.)

the second type of upgrade, the ones I think you are talking about, still come from packs. They are quite rare unfortunately. (Many are Super Rare so 35k packs are the best odds of finding one.) I have spent over 8 million coins and bought 285 35k packs (the version that gives both sides) I still don't have all the alternate abilities. (And no, I am not talking about RUX abilities in case anyone is curious.)

As for grinding to unlock things again, I don't want to miss lead you, GW2 is FAR more time intensive than the original. There are some tricks to reduce the grind but even with these it is a very long haul. (Which is why I don't understand why things are time exclusive in addition to insanely grindy. Its like they want players to earn the right to enjoy the game.)
