Re: Do we really have a chance to see GW3?

@DecreeNo9 Gonna be a pessimistic guy here but probably not. Bfn flopped so hard that popcap vancouver practically died overnight while both gw1 and 2 skyrocketed past a year of support with news of a new game coming someday. Pvz 3 has no news about it's reboot and popcap doesn't answer any questions about it.

Outside of the sub reddit nobody knew bfn or pvz 3 existed or they did not like it, which goes to say how much the advertising failed at its job, even the switch port was blasted for being an incomplete game being sold as a finished one.

Bfn by definition is a franchise killer imo: no marketing of the game leading to poor sales, history of rushed development, rapid change of established gameplay formula for no real reason other than to try and copy more successful franchises yet these mechanics are introduced horribly (fossil fighters frontiers, black ops 4 zombies, and half of the battle royal genre), and trying desperately to piggyback off of new fans while alienating the previous auidience and getting no one.

People can like bfn all they want but that's just them liking a game rather than it actually being a good game.

I'll still join discussions about a potential gw3 but honestly unless popcap straight up makes it i doubt the franchise is in a good spot.

@stukapooka I can't really disagree with you here. I do like BfN more than most other series veterans, but it's still my least favorite of the 3, and the GW games have always had this niche they've occupied that made them successful, even if not to the level of some of the other multiplayer shooters out there. With ActiBlizz's current situation and seeing how much OW has declined in general, I really wish they would have stuck with the GW formula and just tweaked it a bit, instead of trying to integrate certain potions of that game, along with some others, into the PvZ shooters.

They did indeed try to keep us old guard while also trying to attract more 'mainstream' shooter players with BfN, but it obviously didn't go so well for them. In trying to expand their market share, while not advertising the game enough, releasing it too early, and making some decisions that even more supportive players like me are unhappy with, BfN while not a complete disaster, fell far short of the earlier games.

The lack of news is disheartening for sure; what is up with PvZ3? are you planning a new shooter, and if so, when? A new comic is coming out soon and we know they haven't abandoned PvZ as an IP as PvZ2 and all 3 current shooters are still playable and by all accounts, doing well, even BfN isn't faring that badly right now, so it would make sense to make a GW3. They have got to do a better job on a new shooter than they did with BfN, and this includes a likely return to GW style over BfN, while implementing some of BfN's better ideas. I for one am ready for a new game if it's a good one, but test it better, balance it better, moving and shooting have got to be better than BfN, market it better and have more dev communication, longer public beta, return to what worked while also innovating where they can, give us good maps, support it better, and give it a better economic model than BfN had. They've proven that GW wasn't a fluke with GW2 doing even better. I don't want BfN to be the end of these games, we need a new one, and soon, but not so soon that it's launched in a bad state.

@Iron_Guard8 The fact that gw1 and 2 were as successful as they were really still drives the question of why fix what isn't broken? Why not instead just keep improving its flaws as no one was really in a burnout from the garden warfare formula?

These question keep me wondering what would've happened with gw if overwatch wasn't as popular as it was in 2016?

@stukapooka I'm positive that they wanted to try to grow their market share of the hero shooter space and saw that back then that OW was doing even better than GW2 (sad though that is, I'm still playing GW and GW2 and even before all the Actibliz controversies I uninstalled OW a long time ago), and thought they could get some of that. The loot box system in OW is especially egregious even though it has its ardent defenders I've gotten into arguments with, if you've played it, you know how the system in GW and GW2 is so much better for getting stuff you want. I love how you never get repeats of items (barring consumables) in the packs, so you won't get the same hat over and over while you get a pittance of their in game money for that in OW, which got annoying in a hurry. So they wanted to make the game even bigger by making changes to try to appeal to more people and they ended up alienating large swathes of new folks and veterans, and we are where we are now thanks to that.

As to your second point, I believe we'd have gotten GW3 with some of the better ideas of BfN possibly worked into it, but it would have fully been a GW game, if not for OW and possibly the BR games, although thankfully, they never tried that with the games barring soil survivors, which is similar but works with the PvZ theme. I'd like to see that and capture the taco back in GW3!

@Iron_Guard8 I think there will be GW3. I don't know if you have seen a game released by Ubisoft some time ago. It looks like hero shooting (or maybe not). If EA sees the success of the game, it may start to make GW3 or similar GW games, or a new IP

@DecreeNo9 I'm normally not one to hope for something, as hope often leads to disappointment, but I hope you're right. Part of me wonders why they released BfN with so little fanfare and support, and in such a bad state, when they know that GW and GW2 did very well. Millions of people played these games and just a quick perusal of the many YouTubers that play the games and you'll see how excited people were for GW3, and then we got BfN. Maybe they thought the game would sell itself, maybe there were serious problems with development that we don't know about that led to them launching it in such a state, maybe something else happened.

Then watch the various YouTubers' coverage of the game drop off rapidly, and even folks like Zack Scott, who is my default PvZ shooter YouTuber, lost interest as time wore on and currently he has no active PvZ shooter coverage and I found his channel thanks to GW1 (and am in a few of his videos as he plays on PC). Somewhat Awesome Games, whose videos I direct people to for the gnomes and other neat stuff in GW2, covered it early and then nothing. BfN just didn't live up to what we all wanted. There's that excellent video by Krook that interviews the various folks that love PvZ shooters and most don't hate BfN, but it just pales when compared to the GW games.

I know some love BfN and I don't hate it like many do, but it just falls flat in so many ways. We need a GW3, or whatever it's called, and get that spark back where folks like Zack make so many videos; he has over 300 videos of GW, over 400 of GW2, and only a little over 100 for BfN. It has to be handled better than any of our current games though, they've really angered some folks over the lack of support for stuff like achievements and community challenge hats in GW2 since BfN launched, the BfN situation and other issues like hackers. A well handled sequel, especially if it brings back the old maps (modified as needed), adds new ones, works well, is fairly monetized, and is marketed and supported well, can easily be a huge success. I for one am ready to buy such a PvZ shooter, that's for certain, and I know I'm not alone. So come on PopCap/EA, give us some good news and give us a great new GW game!

@Iron_Guard8 Before the emergence of the new GW, we can only put our hope on the shooting game of Ubisoft. EA usually sees others make a lot of money and then makes similar games. You can refer to codmw2019. The free mode has brought a lot of new players. I don't know if EA can notice the game of Ubisoft,

@Iron_Guard8 I say it was more developmental issues as you can't find anything for the game before 2019 and the alpha was closely guarded probably to not reveal the massive overwatch style changes.

I don't blame the youtubers for leaving honestly, it's clear they enjoyed gw and clearly had fun with the 2 games but with bfn they're suddenly thrust into a whole new overwatch styled game that they simply don't enjoy playing and theyre not oblidged to make content for it if they don't enjoy it. Heck you can find random small channel videos that have millions of views from gw styled content.

Its worse for all these massive changes especially after gw2 where they proved they could remaster gw1 styled maps so a gw3 that did this would seen like a no brainer but instead we got this mess.

I really don't blame people for leaving as they all joined on for the gw series and not overwatch from wish.

@stukapookaThere are a lot of changes in BFN and gw2. If you look at the zombie camp, gw2 will feel very repress, but BFN doesn't. If you play EA games carefully, their personnel seem to be very poor after 2016. NFS2017 BFV anthem was sold after 2016, with bad reputation and poor quality, I don't know what they have done in the past three years between gw2 and BFN, but it's unreasonable to compare the time and the quality of the game

@DecreeNo9 That was a thematic style because gw2's narrative was that the zombies had quickly taken over with the help of zmechs. Bfn barely had any story connection to the previous games and the ones it does give are very poor.

Battlefront 2 sold poorly and was ripped to shreds by fans in late 2016.

3 years passed in between but there is alot of evidence that bfn development started in early 2019 as its alpha was very shortly released after walnut hills was released for gw2 and founders quickly followed rather than an official beta. Gw2 was made shorlty after gw1 but was a direct sequel so it didn't have the handicap of trying to rework the entire system from scratch like bfn did.

Time and quality don't always go hand in hand but they are often a deciding factor as it takes time for a game to be created and play tested by its developers.

@stukapooka At present, many people stay in gw2 instead of BFN. If BFN starts production in 2019, I think BFN should be sold at least in 2020, not in 2019. It is difficult to confirm the fate of GW. At present, we need a game with the same theme as GW, and can make EA notice him. GW3 may start production

@DecreeNo9 Oh yeah the game at minimum needed another year in development. The worst part about its cancellation is that gw as a series may go down with it despite them being successful.

@ejhsegaI think everyones hoping for that at this point as literally no one has any hope for pvz 3 and another bfn would feel like kicking a guy when they're already down.

  • @stukapooka Luckily it turned out mostly fine in the end with the TTK/TTV changes, the Founders build was awful and I feel bad for everyone who had to play that, but I'm sure the damage was already done at that point.

@shurikeninja They did improve since foundeers but like you said the damafe was already done and alot of fans jumped ship and i can't say I blame them.
