I have to say this is the worst type of money grabbing system to require the Gold online gaming feature. My 12 year old son bought this in Argos (a store where you cannot see the product until after purchase) and we get it home to find out that we need Gold Membership. First I should not have to continue paying for something he has bought (very bad practice) and second our internet connection has never been great. This is compounded by the fact that Argos will not take the product back as it has been opened. If you have an online only product then why not sell it only once you are inside the Gold Members area rather than through the shops unless you want to trick people into your memberships. Also although we have seen the printing of 'Online Only' (after the fact) it is still quite small and the text should be at least as large as the name of the game. I will be contacting the Office of Fair Trading concerning this practice as it seems dishonest at best and manipulative and deceitful at worst.

I have Internet but no PSN, can I play the offline mode on a PS4 without PSN? If no this is a VERY BAD policy.
- Anonymous10 years ago
I also have this problem, I have internet but do not want to pay for membership of PSN+ I should be able to play the basic game without paying more $$$ every month/year. I chatted with EA advisor but they were no help.
- So since PSN charges for internet you are basically forcing people to continuesly pay to play your game? That is genuinely shameful.

Money grabbing is too light a statement! We should put this up on ripoff.com.
incredible...
- Why should an internet connection be required. Why do you want to financially hurt those who use your product! Why not go ahead respond to the fact that there are people complaining EA_Stephen?
That's very well said, it's one big rip off!

Just bought the game today for my 5 year old daughter. I am having the same problem that these people had over 3 years ago. So I do have an internet connection. But not an XBox Gold account. Why can't I play the solo mode with just internet connection only?
It looks like ya'll recognized and fixed the problem/issue when you came out with Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2

Can I play on my own?
For the first time, we’re introducing a unique solo play experience where you can play every single game mode either by yourself against AI, or with the help of a friend in local split screen. We’ll have more details on what else you can expect from solo play very soon!
Will I need Xbox Live Gold or PS+ to play the game?
You will not need Xbox Live Gold or PS+ to play the game. All local play features (solo play and local split screen), can be experienced with an internet connection only. If you want to jump online to play with friends you will require Xbox Live Gold or PS+.
So if you can acknowledge the foul-up for that and fix if for the future games. I think since the product is still on the market EA needs to make it right for the rest of community that puts money in EA pockets by patching or whatever you need to do to give the original Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare game the ability to play single player just as the Part 2 can.

@Satxkiller Unfortunately the original Garden Warfare has no offline modes, the game was designed as an always-online title and as such if playing on an Xbox you will need Xbox Live.
- Anonymous8 years agoGot this game for my son for Christmas. I've been reading the posts and I see everyone saying there is no offline option. I'm from the time before internet. I didn't even realize there were games you could buy for any gaming console that could only be played on the internet. So when he opened the game we put it in the Xbox he also got for Christmas. It installed and, I don't care what anyone says, he played the game by himself offline. I watched him play it and i tried it myself as well. Note we had no xbox live account at the time and still do not.
He didn't try to play it again till today. Long after the return policy limit. This time he could not play offline and got pretty upset. Way to go EA. Slimy business practice at best to not put in giant print on the front of the box "FOR ONLINE PLAY ONLY". Or something to that effect. Tiny "Requires Xbox live gold. Sold seperately" at the bottom of the front cover is purposefully deceitful in my opinion. I bought the game before we even opened the console. I didn't even know what Xbox gold was.
While I now understand it is a subscription you pay monthly for to be able to play with others who have also subscribed. I still don't understand why it cant be played solo as others have commented that option is available in the second edition of the game.
So this is not solved in my opinion. Being able to play it once but never again has not been explained. I am not happy with EA or the responses I've read on your site. I am also displeased with your practice of selling online only games without explicit notice that a subscription is required. I know your lawyers have told you the little box at the bottom of the package is sufficient to avoid law suites. But who do you want to please? Your lawyers or your customers? We will definitely think twice and remember what is essentially you ripping us off next time we come across another EA game we are considering purchasing. Thank you an gfy. - EA_Darko8 years ago

@kgb420kgb It is most likely a case that when you first played the game your son had a free trial of Xbox live or played it during a free weekend.
The case does state that an online connection is required. It also states that an Xbox Live subscription will be required.
As is addressed it's in small print at the bottom and i never even saw it on my husbands copy of the game. I would like to refer to the question that was asked: Who do you want to please your lawyers or your customers? If you helped your customers that wouldn't even be a problem. Or rather should we expect that you just don't care about these customers. We're only a small amount of your money right? Four years to have someone even say a live account is required- come on.

@Amistaria As the game is an always online title then you will need a constant internet connection. If playing on Xbox or PS4 then you will need to subscribe to their online service over which we have no control. If you have a PC then you can play the game on PC without paying any additional subscription.
- Anonymous8 years ago
Ya'll own the game. Microsoft and Sony don't. You made it a requirement for XBox Gold. I have a constant internet connection. The problem isn't the console it's the restrictions ya'll put on the game that isn't necessary. EA has enough clout to goto Microsoft and Sony and change the requirements for the game so that people can play it without having to shell out more money to be able to play a game they already own. You shouldn't be able to hold our product at ransom unless we pay every month to be able to play a game that we already paid for and own.

@Satxkiller As the game is an always online experience then you will need a constant internet connection. If you are playing on a PS4 or XboxOne then the console developers have implemented a paid for service in order to play online, we have no control over how this and if you wish to play the game without paying a subscription fee then you can do so by playing the PC version of the game. I would recommend speaking with Sony and/or Microsoft for more information on why they charge a fee for online access.
Sounds more like you're saying you don't care and it's not your problem than anything. Why is it that to play single-player, it requires an online connection? To play with other people obviously that's the case, but even multiplayer games have sections that are 'offline' for solo play where you don't need the subscription. If games that are supposed to be entirely online multiplayer have this figured out.. Why don't you? Why are you putting the blame on Xbox and PlayStation for EA game's choice to not allow people to play a game, that isn't even hugely multiplayer, offline?

@Amistaria As it states on the box, the game requires a constant internet connection in order to play.
No one is blaming anyone, the post was in reply to a user asking why they needed to pay for a subscription on the Xbox and/or PS4 in order to play, I was merely pointing out that Xbox Live and PS+ are services that we have no control over. If you wish to play PVZ: GW without the need of a subscription then PC is the best way to go.
Also, just to clarify there are no offline modes or elements to PVZ: GW.
Option to also not have to worry about buying a game to be told 'oops you can't play that': Never buy from EA games again, don't have to worry about the well known poor community service, go ahead and acknowledge the winners of Worst Company in America(2012,2013,2016 at least from what I've seen) and 5th place already this year of most hated companies in America has really earned their place and join the many sharing their very poor experiences with you as a company 🙂 Turns out, the people that are upset actually aren't the minority. Good Day.

@fq5443s are you having an issue we can help with?
- Anonymous8 years ago
It's really a rip off!
The pegi rating is 7 but you can only play it if you are older than 13 because it need a connection to the server.
The game will not start if the player is below 13 years. This information has been given to me by the playstation support.
The first time you start the game EA request the birthday from the PSN account and if the player is less than 13 there will appear a message,
that the player is too young.
The only option that you have than is to exit the game!
Very very shameful!
- Anonymous8 years ago
that is very ridiculous for EA, why do you need to have it constantly connected to the internet when you only want to play single player or couch multiplayer only, it doesn't make any sense. isn't it enough for us to buy the game? you are a very greedy company. of course this won't do anything because all you can hear and see is money.. you don't give a * with your customers
well this was a waste of 20 bucks. so much for wanting to play this game. Oh well, down the drain that money goes.....
I 100% agree they should come back and fix it
You can still play the game but only the solo modes or split screen
