Still happening as of last night.
Popcap just doesn't care anymore. Instead they want us to buy more items.

I am the creator of this thread. I reported this issue back in May and described the problem like so many others, and even posted 13 times the time i experienced the issue for further investigation. Yet, every time i load the game i am being reminded that this is still an issue. And of course will not waste more of my time posting specifics in here, as nothing has changed.
So yes, the game does have an actual issue.
Same problem here on my PS4. It started a few days ago. Never had this issue before though.
The game does not start in the backyard, but in the zombie character selection instead. I can however, not select anything, nor can I exit the selection screen. I found out that switching to the plant side does allow me to select a character and start the game. Returning to the zombie side after that doesn't seem to bring back the problem, until the next time the game is started...
