Some final thoughts on GW2 vs BfN and BfN in general
This thread is supposed to be a collection of random thoughts I had that weren't really enough to start a topic for discussion on their own. I reinstalled GW2 yesterday to reevaluate my opinions and check if the player base is really as big as some say. I will also mention some stuff about BfN in general and some forum posts I would have made if the game weren't cancelled on September 1st (or in June, as you know by now).
Now irrelevant forum posts
- Suggestion: Option to display controls in-game, especially on PC
- Suggestion: Giddy Park Raids (I mad a post about them, but wanted to offer more details on my idea)
- Suggestion: Noob Armor, like in the beginner's mode of GW1 and 2
- Post about most maps sharing too many visual elements
- Suggestion: Trump hair for Citron
- Suggestion: In-game messages "Tremendous!" and "Big League!"
Random BfN thoughts
- That Zombie has a beautiful voice!
- That Zombie is the king of Pop -> Really? The Disco Zombie replaced the Michael Jackson Zombie in PvZ 1, so shouldn't he be the king of Pop?
- It is criminal not to release the soundtrack. The Preserve Pasture theme is objectively the best piece of music ever created.
- Laura Shigihara is extremely talented. Her soundtrack for PvZ 1 was so good and many of the themes, therefore, could be remixed for the 3D shooters, like Loonboon -> Loon Skirmish
- Brains are quite rich in Cholesterol. (You're dead so it doesn't matter, instead we'll use this solar power, to make a lawn defense at any hour)
- Considering what the Newspaper says in the beginning of the Trailer (extended in-game version), where is BfN placed in the timeline?
- Peashooter looks 100x better in BfN compared to the GW games
- Every low health character should have a melee attack. After all, the trailer shows Nightcap punching an Imp to the lyrics "Punch a zombie in the teeth with super-sonic-spead, a ninja mushroom please, classic P's vs Z's)
- Have I said the need to release the soundtrack yet?
- They should release more concept art and high res renders of the characters
GW2 vs BfN
I have (once again) come to the conclusion that GW2 (and 1) are more frustrating to play than BfN.
- GW2 is very unbalanced and every player knows the end meta
- On PC cheaters are a problem (therefore, I tried the PS4 version this time)
- Some of the achievements are unobtainable now in GW2, BfN's are all accessible without multiplayer
- You move extremely slowly in GW2, yet the TTK is shorter. Therefore, it is way more frustrating to be vanquished.
- The sound that is played after being vanquished contributes to this a lot.
- In some cases, trying is punished (like "consequences" in Ops)
- You get a lot less coins per game in GW2 and the packs are very expensive, resulting in a pay to win mechanic. Either play for years to get the overpowered legendary characters or pay until you get them. Once you get them, you will will nearly every fight.
- The mostly dark theme doesn't feel like PvZ, unlike GW1 and BfN
- GW2 has more elements that encourage returning to the game. Instead of unlocking random rewards, you unlock character variants, which encourage continuing to play further. While I dislike variants, I have to admit unlocking them is exciting. They could merge BfN's and GW2's mechanic for a sequel. The upgrade system would be upgraded to a build your own variant system. You would unlock a variant, Electric Peas let's say. You would also unlock the customizations for Peashooter and an ability that makes the character unique. That customization and ability could then be used in the custom character builder. You could combine Electric Pea's looks with a fire primary weapon. In order not to confuse others, the primary damage type is displayed above your character.
- BfN also has some elements that encourage returning to it, like the prize map. All the skins you unlock from it will never be used, though. They disappear into a menu and you will never look at them again after unlocking them, as switching skins frequently and manually is annoying. A random outfit option could solve this. GW2 doesn't have this problems, as the unlockable variants are prominently displayed and can be switched to easily.
Size of GW2 and BfN player base
Surprisingly, I was able to find nearly (if not) full matches in GW2 very frequently. This completely contradicts my previous experience with GW2 on PS4 European Servers. At the same time, most of the BfN lobbies were empty. The evening I tried both games Team Vanquish was completely dead in BfN, which had never happened to me before. Usually, the BfN PS4 servers are very well populated. I think this could be an issue with matchmaking. The day after I was able to find lobbies in BfN all day, even at times were no-one would play. It appears GW2 is shockingly popular for a 4 year old shooter that already has a sequel. We all know BfN had no marketing and GW2 did, so it shouldn't be as surprising as it was so me. I thought most claims of GW2 being alive were from PC players, as I couldn't find lobbies on Ps4 in months. Very strange.
Toxicity in GW2 and BfN
The popular opinion is that BfN's community is more toxic. I couldn't disagree more. In 4/8 matches I played, there were at least 2-3 player who constantly insulted other using voice chat. The very second I joined my first game I heard someone insulting a noob. This player didn't move much, but defended the objective and vanquished a few players. Yet, others wer insulting him for being bad and not doing anything (even though he wasn't afk and actually performing rather well).
Overall, I think the GW2 community is way more toxic, not just on social media, but in game as well
