Split screen is local only. You can't do anything online while in split screen mode so sadly it's not possible to invite online friends in any of the possible modes.

You can find plenty of posts here describing how to use split screen if you type "split screen" into the search function. Inviting friends who are on their own consoles int your back yard can be done in several ways, perhaps the simplest being the world menu in the plant or zombie base.

First get two players on the same console in your backyard then go to the tv by the character select booth. Choose the option for split screen. After that join your friends backyard. Honestly having four people on one screen could make things quite tough.
