I played around 30 games before getting my first.
I played on a variety of difficulties and as both plants and zombies. I believe it is a random chance per slot machine.
As with trying to get the treasure yeti in the last game, you may go 50 games without seeing one, or get 2 or 3 in a row.
When I did get the super boss it was on normal difficulty as a plant. It was on wave 10 and I was playing solo.
