That time yet again

While discussing game trailers on another web site I mentioned how great the various Garden Warfare trailers are, and it was hard to pick just one as the best. There are so many, and they're so good. I ended up with the original GW launch trailer:

Hard to believe this was 8 years ago! So once again, it's time to point out that BfN hasn't gotten any significant updates since 2020, and all 3 games are in a state of maintenance where they're all playable but stagnant. Considering how well both GW games did, and how they are still doing well despite their lack of support and some balance/bug fixes that never got fully fixed, people are chomping at the bit for a new game already! Right now only PvZ2 is really seeing any serious attention and that's a crying shame. Are you going to let these wonderful games just slowly die over time with no successor? It sure looks that way, but like zombies are hungry for brains, people are hungry for more GW! Don't let it just fade away over time like this, bring us more of what we loved about these games, games that stand out over those dull, 'realistic' shooters that are just not all that interesting. We're long overdue for a GW3.

  • I am still really hoping for another sequel in the franchise as well. These games are still great fun to play, despite not having updates for quite some time now.

I have theorised lately that EA may be reviving the franchise to an extent, I do not have much to back this up, however seeing the Frontline Fighters DLC added to the Xbox and Playstation Store for free with Game Pass recently and Garden Warfare 2 being added to Steam leaves me to assume that this is possible. I will make a new post on this soon.

I have been playing Garden Warfare 2 quite a lot lately and I always hold hope for further updates or a new shooter. The player base is still here, although it will probably drop off slowly over time if no further support occurs, which I would not want to see. Even small patches of support occasionally would go a long way.

I wonder what is happening with PvZ3 lately actually, maybe this will have an impact on the shooters?

I really hope to see further support with these shooters, and soon! 🤞

  • @Iron_Guard8Glad some discussion is going on as i haven't had much motivation to post and dont have many ideas at the moment.

One thing I love about the early gw1 trailers are the spoof of hardcore military shooters especially the one that has the gray filter with garlic drones flying in like helicopters and foot soldiers shadow showing him equipping his helmet like every fps does in a cutscene.

For 2014 it really was effective for me As I had gotten burned out of repetitve and gray shooters of the time.

It really hurts how gw2 could easily be improved by changing some code to simply make the portal rotation not garbage.

Being a pvz fans is pain right now especially since we now why bfn was a frankensteins of different ideas: project hot tub.

If you havent seen project hot tub was the cancelled pve and my goodness it looked amazing, a pvz game in the style of PS2 era titles like ratchet and clank action adventure with an actual story? TAKE MY MONEY! But then in infinite wisdom they scrapped it and poured the money into a star wars game, THAT ALSO GOT CANNED!

Why the heck does it have better lighting and artstyle than bfn despite using bfn objects in its artstyle how?!

And the fact that it was in development since 2015 with gw2, you know it really isnt a stretch to say 2016 is where pvz EA peaked.

I agree in that i wanted more unique shooters if the industry's gonna shy away from other genres. I mean overwatch two just got a update and called it a sequel, cod literally went full circle, halo infinite flopped since 343 wants rival popcap in not communicating with fans, battlefield 2042 is EA being EA (boy its nice knowing those project hot tub funds went a good cause *sarcasm*).

Ill probably make a deeper post on this soon. At least before the 18th since the official console release for bfn was around that time.

@stukapooka OW2 is more like OW.8, it's actually a step backwards and so glad I stopped playing that thing years ago as GW2 is so much more fun and even with the PC hacker issue for MP games has a better community than OW's massively toxic playerbase.

2016-2017 was a great time for PvZ fans, especially for the shooters as GW2 was getting lots of love, we got the trials of Gnomus, the community was really active, and GW was still doing really well even with the sublime GW2 being a smash hit and doing so well.

We needed GW3 instead of BfN. I got almost 1000 hours out of BfN, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy aspects of it, but I have over 3000 hours in GW2 and still going, while I haven't touched BfN in months. If they'd give GW2 more attention; just give us better portal events, especially boss hunts, soil survivors, and capture the taco, and let people get those community hats, that'd go a long way for some much needed goodwill and keep people interested while they work on a GW3. I hate hearing nothing about a new game and it looking like we won't get one, especially with the current crop of multiplayer shooters is mostly garbage (single player retro FPS games are doing really well right now in contrast), and it'd be a great time to give us a sequel to the amazing GW series.

@Iron_Guard8Overwatch 2 will be like the original in that it will be popular for a few weeks but then everyone will burn out of it alongside blizzards disastrous lore and gameplay changes. It's kinda sad how overwatch became the focal point of more vibrant shooters since i think there are way better options. I mean games like team fortress classic and starfox assualt multiplayer are a literal zombie chugging along but they still have deeper/more satisfying gameplay than 90% of shooters coming out now imo.

2016-2017 was the peak. We had gw2 getting support and new modes, heroes had released and was doing well, and the community was really active like you say. Now we have barely anyone talking about it.

There are many roads the series should've taken instead of bfn and they point to either project hot tub(a post for another time) and gw3. Yeah bfn has some good things but a lot of the qol feels like it could just be patched into gw and it would suit it better there like semi auto characters only needing the button held down in bfn.

If they're not gonna do anything for gw they should just give it to the community imo since there are still some modders and such who love the game.

Imo the gaming industry really just needs a shift from mass multiplayer fps games for a while if there not gonna do unique things with it (aka less cod and more doom eternal type of stuff). I really miss the days of games like splinter cell, sly cooper, ratchet and clank, spyro the dragon (the legend ones), and many more. But given the mass market appeal of shooters I don't think the consensus is gonna change no matter how bad it gets in quality or support like halo infinite. Seriously if i see one more "why gaming isn't fun anymore" videos by someone who only plays one shooter genre I'm gonna lose it!

The Plants vs Zombies franchise as a whole started to experience downfall after the release of Battle for Neighborville, at least from my knowledge. The main reason that Battle for Neighborville was not very successful is due to unnecessary changes that were not needed. Garden Warfare 2 continues to be a great game though, and Battle for Neighborville still has its perks, so EA should have another go at creating a sequel in my opinion.

I agree that the Plants vs Zombies shooter games are very unique and that they stand out from other shooter games, and that is a large part of what makes these games fun. The content and gameplay really stands out, having special modes such as Ops and Infinity Time. The town hall events are generally great fun as well, although I really want to see Boss Hunts and the special events return.

I heard about Project Hot Tub or whatnot as well, although that and Plants vs Zombies Adventures were cancelled. A silly reason why Hot Tub was cancelled, I saw that on YouTube. Wow, the Plants vs Zombies franchise really has been suffering lately.

I really want to see the Plants vs Zombies franchise head in a positive direction, with no more cancellations, so that the community can continue to enjoy this franchise for a long time to come.
