The Oh So Depressing Tale of BFN and the FOMO!
Well, I suppose this sums up about everything im about to say. 🤭
At this point, about everyone here knows how BFN is, almost arrogantly, preying on the fear of missing out. I thought I would just make a little last ditch effort post crying about how absolutely detrimental doing this is for the game, and how I think they misinterpreted GW 1/2's high retention times. So here it is a long and ugly cry baby post.
Well What happened!?
If you guys remember, a while back they were talking about how awesome the GW retention times were. Back then, I was so excited. I thought finally, they are going to dump a truck ton of resources and time into an awesome 3rd installment of the series, now knowing the potential it has! It truly was exciting... GW 1 and 2 were great games, but undeniably flawed. Poor balance, laggy at times, and had their fair share of glitches. With this 3rd game they have the chance to really perfect the formula that they knew worked so well. But.... they... didn't exactly do that.
They made BFN. They changed everything we loved about the series and gave us almost 0 time for feedback before rushing it out to the public with a surprise release straight from its so called "alpha". Well... thats okay, right? Change isn't a bad thing necessarily! Maybe the game is still great, just a little different! Unfortunately.... no, it wasn't that either. Its been said a thousand times, but yes BFN feels awful, uncomfortable controls, even more lag, and just overall worse gameplay. Hmm...Okay.. not such a good start, but surely the devs are going to keep doing an awesome job and EVENTUALLY BFN will be as awesome as the GW series!!!................ Well uhh..... no.. not exactly..
No, its clear where the focus is.. and where it went... and why the game itself feels so... rushed and just.. incomplete. Its all very clear. The focus wasn't on gameplay at all, it wasn't even on making a fun game! Nah... the focus was to prey on the natural fear of missing out. That's what this all is, that's why they were talking about the retention times. They saw those retention times... and probably started drooling! They either completely misinterpreted WHY people loved GW 1/2 or... they just had poor intentions from the beginning! This is all... just my guesses on what happened, so take this for what its worth.
So egregious!
Yeah BFN doesn't exactly hide how much it wants you to keep playing. Instantly you are made well aware of the events... prizemaps.... your quests... Each one clearly designed to just.. hook you, but... not in a good way!
Quests... fail. They are meant to get you to fear missing one, causing you to log in every single day and bore yourself. If you miss one, you are going to lose prize bulbs... then you just won't get that one skin you wanted.. You just have to log in! The quests in GW 2 definitely had some stinkers, but for the most part encouraged you to just do what you already like doing, but get some extra rewards for it! There also wasn't any rush to get one done because you were able to hold onto it for however long you wanted to, no prizemap to complete before the month ends either! Play this mode and ... sure have some coins, stars, and EXP multipliers! It rewarded you... for having fun.. and playing what you liked. In BFN though almost every quest requires you to play in some way.. that is just unnatural. It disrupts your game... forces you to just... grind... or to play a way you just absolutely hate... GW 2 had an entire board of quests and options to choose from to find something you like... nope not with BFN... you get to pick from 2 with just.. one reroll. Sorry! Head over to that PVE region and start farming some browncoats! Like I said, this isn't fun, all this does is drive players away. Same exact thing for character quests, which also leads to unrelated balance problems of every single person playing a single character. They are no fun, so why bother doing one... but wait, what are you doing! You can't miss one, the prizemap remember!
The prizemap and events look.. fun. On the surface, what's there not to love! A lovely theme is applied to the entire giddy park and there are some cool new skins! Of course, who doesn't want to get those! Say.. you are pretty busy today though, but..... If you don't log on and grind for an excessive amount of time... You will never get that grand prize... or even get to the end of the prizemap.... These skins will be gone forever if you don't get them! You can't miss that! You just.. have to log in today..
Oh and look at that! Rux is back! Something to spend all those coins on after you have unlocked all the variants (🙂 oh wait..) and your favorite skins from the reward-o-tron! Or... not. Rainbow stars... Right! Thats okay, you can surely earn those from the weekly mystery portal events like in GW 2.... Oh no nevermind... just coins... and a handful of stars from one quest. Well hey you got like 40 stars, maybe you can get something with those.. 1000 stars for the best skins... Oh.. well maybe you can just buy it then.... or... ehh... that equals 10 real world dollars. Thats okay. You can just save up and buy that skin once you get to 1000 rainbow stars (in 10 years). Uh oh! The skins cycle out every day... and that one really awesome skin you want will be unobtainable in just a week! Oh well... guess you just... have to buy it. Otherwise you would miss out!
Why these are absolutely horrible for the game
These horrible hooks are just counterproductive. The goal is to literally hold players hostage, forcing them to play this game. Its such an unhealthy tactic, and so ineffective. Nobody likes that. People get extremely put off by this. I know I am, I hate this. I struggle to even work up the smallest amount of desire to just launch the game! Its absolutely disgusting that they would do this, especially since so many young children play this game! Not even just kids, FOMO is a natural human fear.. everyone has it... I am well aware this is a common occurrence in the gaming industry, but I just.. can't believe popcap would go down this vile route. I am... indescribably disappointed.
Is this all BFN is? Is the GW series over?
Is that it? Is that the only reason this game was made? The game was clearly rushed out, and after hearing what they had to say about the retention times, and then seeing all... of this.... I just can't help but feel like thats all this is about. They just wanted to quickly get a horribly egrigious time sucking money making PVZ shooter out there, to feed on the fear of missing out. But... WHY... Imagine if GW 3 released, and it was just awesome, even more so than the previous two. Say it had very few bugs, excellent balance, tons of new content, and possibly a few new mechanics... where would we be now? Imagine if this hypothetical GW 3 then got a continuous stream of high quality updates, introducing new classes... variants... maps... modes.... PVE regions (Hey not everything in BFN is terrible!) How awesome would that be? These new updates would keep older players playing, and new players buying. Its just.... the tools are there.. Everything is there. Is the GW 1/2 team completely gone? They had the perfect formula and they could have really took it to the next level, but they didn't do that. They cheaped out with BFN, and are seemingly just trying to suck out every last penny in your wallet using the fear of missing out....
BUT what do I know. Absolutely no disrespect to the devs, maybe I'm wrong and they really did try their best here, but unfortunately missed the mark. It just seems with the continous refusal to even acknowlodge the problems, extremely slow fixes, and constant preying on the fear of missing out... that the only goal here was to get some cash. I love PVZ and I really love Garden Warfare... I'd really hate to see this end up being the end. I'm just worried BFN won't do so well... and they will look at that as like "Welp! Guess nobody likes these games anymore! Lets can 'em!". 😢
Apologies for this this extremely long post, I don't really expect anyone out there to read the entire thing.. just mostly.. hoping that maybe a dev or something will stumble upon it. That's all though, thanks if you did read it and I genuinely do just want to see the best for the PVZ series!
