The Summonable Discussion!

Hi everyone,

I am going to discuss what I think overall of the summonables in the PvZ Shooters, and a general basis of how I would like to see them change in a future shooter. I have always liked using the summonables in the shooters, I do enjoy and have gotten used to the cooldown system in Battle for Neighborville, although the Sticker Pack method in the Garden Warfare games is a good way of being able to obtain and use them as well. In a potential future shooter, I would like to see all or at least almost all of the summonables that have been in the previous games to make a return.

The problem with the cooldown system in Battle for Neighborville is that it limits the amount summonables that can be used, and along with the "summonable nerfs" that are present in Battle for Neighborville, it limits their effectiveness. The problem with the sticker pack system is that it is a random process in acquiring summonables, meaning that if you enjoy using particular types of summonables, it can take ages or be really difficult to obtain them in the first place for future use, as well as potentially being expensive. However, in a future shooter, the system could perhaps be based around being able to buy your own summonables, but they need an unlock except for the basic ones before use, but you can decide which ones you want to buy and when you want to buy them. On top of this, perhaps if you can still obtain them in Sticker Packs if players wished to obtain summonables randomly and did not have specific preferences of which ones players wanted to purchase.

So time for my thoughts.

The Way Summonables Could Work

When a summonable is placed, there would be no cooldown before you could place another summonable, although there would be an internal cooldown of approximately 1 minute after placing a summonable from a summon pile. However, regarding the Pot or Bot locations, as players need to wait until a summonable placed in there has been vanquished, there could be an internal cooldown before that Pot or Bot location can be used again of approximately 30 seconds instead to compensate for this.

I would want to see a wide variety of summonables return to a future shooter, including summonables from the Garden Warfare shooters, so deciding which ones to place should be as quick and efficient as possible. Grouping the summonables into different categories may be useful, or allowing players to pin specific types that they use frequently would be useful for quick and efficient placement. To assist with this, every summonable type that a player does not currently own any of would not even show up on a player's summonable menu until they obtain at least one of those summonables, unless they are pinned.

The Pot and Bot locations, as well as the summon pile locations, should be considered in each map. For the Pot and Bot locations, many of them should be close or in the objective, while some could be located a bit further toward the enemy team's spawn (not trying to encourage spawn camping here, just at the front of the objective as front line attackers), a couple could be located around a corner for surprise attacks and cover, and a couple could be located at the back of the objective or in more hidden areas for Pots and Bots that do not require a line of sight to attack enemies or that should be protected. For summon pile locations, they should be located in easy to reach and access areas, generally near the capturing team's spawn.

On a general note, summonables should be buffed across the board, even if just providing more basic changes such as slight changes to health and damage. In Battle for Neighborville, summonables generally became a lot worse due to random nerfs, bad positioning and mechanics that help counter summonables such as overhealth and such. The summonables should work in a similar way to the way they did in the Garden Warfare series, I do like using and making use of the summonables in Battle for Neighborville along with the cooldown system, but the summonables should be buffed, although there would probably be some nerfs required here and there as well, for example a lower fire rate.

In order to obtain summonables, you generally would have a few options. You could buy them seperately or in bundles at a time, and the more advanced ones would have an unlock cost before you can buy them freely, although the basic ones would not require an unlock. Additionally, you would gain a starter pack of the summonables that you unlocked as well, which would generally provide you a discount and some to start out with upon the unlock. If you did not really mind which summonables you had or got, you could buy random packs to see if you get any and which ones you get, rather than choosing, but this strategy may turn out to be cheaper in some cases as well if you are willing to test your luck.

Legendary and Seasonal Summonables

I would want to see the return of Legendary and Seasonal summonables, as they are actually my favourite type of summonables and they are harder to obtain compared to the regular variants. These variants only appeared in GW2 (unless GW had seasonal ones, not sure) and while they did not technically improve the variety of summonables available for use, providing more variants for specific summonables are always fun to see, and I always want to see that. These are my thoughts regarding these types of summonables:

My Thoughts Regarding Legendary Summonables

  • These would require extra Coins or possibly a premium currency to purchase them.
  • They would not be always available but would return, or they would be significantly rare to obtain in Sticker Packs.
  • All Legendary Summonables would be more powerful compared to their regular counterparts, not just vanity changes.
  • There would be more Legendary Summonables available overall.
  • Suggested Perfume Shroom Changes: It has a shorter delay before it explodes, has a slightly higher explosion range, it recharges slightly faster and it has slightly more health.
  • Suggested Gatling Bot Changes: It has a faster fire rate, a shorter cooldown between shots and it has slightly more health.

My Thoughts Regarding Seasonal Summonables:

  • These would cost slightly more than their regular variants.
  • They would only be available during their respective seasonal events.
  • All Seasonal Summonables would have double health (or some other fixed change), but no other changes compared to their regular counterparts.
  • There would be a slightly wider range of Seasonal Summonables available.

My Random Summonable Suggested Changes

In a future shooter, there could be some interesting changes made to summonables, which would unlikely ever be features, but it would be interesting to see.

  • When you place a summonable, there is a small chance that it will automatically be its legendary variant instead of the regular version, if applicable.
  • Any summonables that you have placed get returned to you at the end of a game if they were not vanquished, and you are able to reuse them again in a future match.
  • When your summonable gets a vanquish, you get the same amount of XP as if you vanquished the player (in Multiplayer) or as if you defeated the Al Hero (in Private Play).

Well, that was really all I wanted to say right now! Please feel more than free to discuss your thoughts as well in this thread, if you agree with something, disagree with something, or want to add to the discussion, please feel free to!

Cool! That's all now!
