Upgrades Discussion: Citron Upgrades!

Welcome to the upgrade discussion post for Citron!

Unique Upgrades

Freshly Squeezed (2 upgrade points): Whenever you vanquish an enemy, you gain a 30% increase to your movement speed when sprinting for 5 seconds, which allows you to escape or regenerate health more easily after you defeat an enemy, or to return to your allies. This speed boost only applies when you are sprinting, although you could use this improved sprint speed to approach another enemy for an attack. This upgrade would suit you more effectively if you are being more offensive, as you must vanquish enemies to trigger this effect as well. To improve your chance of earning vanquishes, you could attack enemies that are on low health or enemies at closer range as your weapon is more effective at that range.

Quenching Cover (2 upgrade points): You restore even more ammo than normal when you successfully block damage with your Peel Shield. You restore 16 ammo for blocking enough damage (instead of the regular 8) which makes utilising your shield even more effective as a way of quickly restoring ammo without the need to reload. Even if you are currently on no ammo, you will not automatically restore ammo, however you can still effectively reload by blocking damage with your shield. Alternating between your primary weapon and shield will work, and when not using this upgrade, this will still work, however will not be as effective, so use this upgrade if you want to restore lots of ammo more efficiently without having to first take lots of damage.

Kinetic Energy (3 upgrade points): Dealing damage to your enemies restores health for your Peel Shield. Every time you deal damage to enemies 30 times, you will restore 40 health for your Peel Shield. It may seem tedious, but your primary weapon shoots 3 projectiles per shot, and your Navel Laser deals rapid damage, so dealing damage this many times should not be difficult to achieve in hindsight. This is really useful if you alternate between shielding and dealing damage, as you can deal damage as a way to restore your shield health at a quicker rate. The restored health may not seem that significant, but it will really start to add up after a while, and it will stack along with your natural shield regeneration while your shield is not active.

Peel Out (3 upgrade points): You gain a movement speed increase of 35% when you are holding your Peel Shield. This allows you to keep up with your allies while trying to shield them because they may move away from your shield. You normally have a slower movement speed when your shield is up, however with this upgrade, this movement speed penalty will basically be completely removed, with a faster movement speed than normal instead. You can use this to move around and exit an area while shielding against incoming enemy attacks, and holding the shield can effectively be used as a way to improve your movement speed, which is easy to do as your shield is easily accessible, and escaping while holding Peel Shield will be easier.

Unique Ability Upgrades

E.M. Peach

Peachy (2 upgrade points): Stunning enemies using your E.M. Peach restores 200 health for your Peel Shield, which is 1/3 of its total health. This effect can stack if you can stun multiple enemies at once, so try and stun multiple enemies together to restore even more shield health, or stun at least 3 enemies at once to restore your shield health completely. You can use your shield to block attacks, as well as quickly lowering your shield and activating E.M. Peach to bring your shield health back before deploying your shield again. This will allow you to continue protecting yourself and allies for longer, while stunning your enemies for support as well. If you need your shield health back quickly, quickly stun enemies if using this upgrade.

Peached (3 upgrade points): Enemies are stunned for longer if you hit them directly with your E.M. Peach. This will leave affected enemies for even longer, making them more vulnerable to attacks from you and your allies, however for this to work you must directly impact the enemy with your device for this effect to work successfully. You are still able to stun enemies with the splash effect of the E.M.Peach, however those enemies will not be stunned for longer. When using your E.M.Peach, try and aim it at the enemy you want to stun for a direct hit, possibly with other enemies nearby to still splash stun other enemies. It may be possible to directly stun multiple enemies, however, this will not be practical as this will be really hard to manage.

Spin Dash

Emergency Exit (1 upgrade point): After you have used your Spin Dash, you get a movement speed increase of 50% for about 3 seconds, which can be used to your advantage to escape a tough situation more easily, or even to travel around faster, as you can activate your Spin Dash and use the speed boost afterwards to get around even faster. This speed boost will trigger and remain in effect whether you are sprinting or not, so you could make use of this upgrade to flank your enemies, or to reduce your chances of being hit by your enemies for a short time. The speed boost will be useful in many situations, so simply use your Spin Dash when the increased speed is important to you. The mobility boost is extreme when you use this upgrade.

Bowling (4 upgrade points): For each enemy you deal damage to with your Spin Dash, you get a cooldown reduction of 5 seconds for your Spin Dash. If you can hit multiple enemies with a single use of Spin Dash, this effect will stack and you may be able to use your Spin Dash again almost immediately after the first use if you can damage lots of enemies at once. Try and aim for multiple enemies to get the most out of this effect, and note that this upgrade will not provide any bonuses if you deal no damage to your enemies, so your Spin Dash would be best used to damage enemies, rather than escaping. If you can activate this without your enemies being aware of it, they will be less likely to avoid your attack as they will be unaware of your Spin Dash.

Navel Laser

Juiced (3 upgrade points): Your Navel Laser has a wider area than normal and will always deal critical damage, as well as reducing the delay before the ability starts to resolve. The improved wideness of your Navel Laser will make it easier to hit your enemies, and you will always deal critical damage, regardless of whether your hit would have normally been a critical hit or not, which will improve your overall damage and the reduced startup time before you start firing will not leave you as vulnerable during your startup. These changes will make the Navel Laser more powerful, which can be used when enemies are in tight spaces, with extra damage and reduced vulnerability during it. These effects will make this ability much more versatile as well.

Pulp Powered (4 upgrade points): Your Navel Laser will last an additional 2 seconds every time you get a vanquish with it. If your damage has charged up completely on your Navel Laser and you are dealing maximum damage, you will retain this maximum damage and the laser will not begin to charge up again if you vanquish an enemy during this time. You will continue doing maximum damage, improving how effective this ability is. You can earn vanquishes more easily by aiming for critical hits and attacking enemies that are on low health, although try to focus the same enemy at any given time, rather than switching targets, as this ability is more suited to single targets, as opposed to your grouped enemies.

These are the upgrades for Citron! These upgrades are useful for greatly improving the power of your shield, your mobility, supportive power and can massively improve your offensive skills when you use your Navel Laser. Not only will these upgrades generally benefit you as a whole, but they can be a great asset to your allies, as your shield and supportive abilities allow you to protect your team and yourself.

  • @TheSprinter85Freshly squeezed: mobility upgrade. Decent

Quenching cover: I really dont like the idea of the shield restoring ammo in the first place.

Kinectic energy: ah yes because citron deserves his overpowered shield back faster.

Peel out: another mobility upgrade but this time for the shield which will make it even harder to corner citron.

Peachy: and a zombies suppose to know this how?

Peached: why isn't this just a normal mechanic?

Emergency exit: the near instant activation ability gets a speed boost after its done, nice.

Bowling: ops is crying in the corner right now I hope you feel good citron mains.

    Juiced: good with decent aim.

Pulp powered: not really that great since naval laser takes a bit too long to vanquish anyway.

  • Citron is a mixed bag for me in BfN. I actually like the new weapon as beams are fun but too easy to use due to their nature, and often abused in GW2, even after the drop off changes, the shield is too good, and Spin Dash is a bit too good as well, but most of these can be fixed with some simple number tweaking.

Freshly Squeezed: It's a bit odd to me since you need to vanquish to use it and it only lasts 5 seconds, but the speed boost only applies to sprint. This comes off to me as used for hit and run tactics, instead of tanking which feels off as BfN's Citron is definitely meant to tank for the team.

Quenching Cover: Use this one on at least one build. Blast through most of your ammo, put this up, get that ammo back, and then shoot when full on ammo again. Very useful if you time things well, as reloading is always a pain, and makes you unable to retaliate.

Kinetic Energy: Can work very well with quenching cover. Swap between blocking damage to reload, and shooting to recharge the shield. The shield is already very good, likely too good, so getting it back even faster is nuts.

Peel Out: Moving faster while your shield is up is great and I like this one a lot as I play mostly TT mode, and a Citron near a capture point with this can rapidly adjust positioning while remaining protected.

Peachy: EMPeach is already powerful, but then you also make your shield more powerful too by letting you recharge it faster? This one is very powerful.

Peached: Thankfully, the bonus stun is only for direct hits, so you can't go crazy with this thing.

Emergency Exit: At one point it's alright. While extra speed is almost always good, it's a minor and specific increase so it wouldn't be worth it if it cost more.

Bowling: Obviously huge with large numbers of closely-packed zombies, so most useful in PvE situations. Also good for objective based modes as players have to group together to secure/defend them. Spin Dash is very powerful in BfN and can wreak havoc against Imps and lower level summonables.

Juiced & Pulp Powered: Remember this combo in Founders? It was insanely good, especially on a character that is supposed to be a tank. Combining the wider beam that always crits and using it longer with crits meant you could single-handedly (single-petally?) clear an entire zombie team off a capture point! It got a needed nerf, but they went a little too far with that and you don't see this ability much in PvP after that. I do have a build with both together but use it only in PvE these days.
