Can't begin VS Mode

I can't figure out how to even get the mode to register that there are two players. I have my keyboard and mouse plugged in, a pair of JoyCons connected by bluetooth, and a PS4 controller plugged in via USB. All three input methods are registered by the game as "Player 1" simultaneously. Furthermore, I can't understnad what button is supposed to be pressed to make the game register an input method as player 2. It shows a generic "play button" icon which is not a real button on either controller. What the **bleep** do I do? My bf was excited to get to try it with me and we can't even get past the "pick sides" menu

    Well, I found my solution with more button mashing, with no thanks to EA's help!

    Step 1: Open game, with or without additional controllers connected.

    Step 2: Open VS. Mode, using the MOUSE (I was already doing this)

    Step 3: DISCONNECT ALL ADDITIONAL CONTROLLERS.

    Step 4: Use the Mouse to select Player 1's side.

    Step 5: RECONNECT your controller of choice.

    Step 6: Press THE MENU BUTTON BIND (JoyCon: [+] | PS4: [OPTIONS])

    Step 7: The Player 2 controller image should now change appearance to indicate the game has detected there are in fact two players. If this doesn't happen, repeat Steps 1-6

    Step 8: ???

    Step 9: Profit! You can now play VS. Mode! Just be sure you don't trigger the "Banned plants" glitch with conveniently timed inputs!

    Hey SnoFitzroy​ , can you try using your keyboard/mouse + another controller (so just the pair of JoyCons or the PS4 controller) ? Also, try to launch the game with no controller at all, just your keyboard/mouse and try connecting the controller once you're in the game to see how it goes.

    Once the second controller is detected, it should tell you which button to press to join as Player 2. But let's see first how it goes with the steps above.

    If it still doesn't work, can you let me know if you're playing on Steam or EA app? Thanks!

    Those precise steps are what I was already doing. I already only boot up the game with KBM then add a controller later. While the game is clearly trying to tell me what button to press, it's a generic button that doesn't exist on any of the controllers, regardless of connection order or if it's only one of them. I've also tried pressing literally every button on each controller and it seems [-] doesn't do anything on JC and [Share] and [Large Rectangle] on PS4 also don't do anything, while every other button on each controller has an input that is recognized as a specific action (moving cursor, pause menu, etc).

    I'm playing on Steam.

    I need help i have a switch OLED and the player two press arrow button to join doesn't work.i have a controller with letters on it and other with arrows both dont work do I need to buy 2 more controllers?
