Bejeweled Stars not advancing earned stars

I am not sure what is happening.  For a few weeks now the completed constellations have changed to gems.  I win levels, earn stars and these giant gems appear and they are not marking the stars I have earned.  There is no way to go forward even if I complete levels.  What is going on? 

I have restarted, cleared cache, did all the things suggested including update phone despite my reluctance, and still not advancing.

Please help.

    Wanted to add the "stars" button keeps saying "ready" but when I click it nothing happens except to display the giant gems.
