Capturing a screen shot

PC instructions

You have two options for taking a screenshot on Windows.

Windows Snipping Tool

You can use the Snipping Tool on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

  1. Press the Windows key on the keyboard (near the spacebar).
    • Or select the Start menu and find the search field.
  2. Type "Snipping Tool" in the search field.

  3. Drag the cursor around an area you want to save.

  4. Click Save.

"Print Screen" and MSPaint

  1. Open the program or applications you'd like to include in the screenshot. Arrange your screen as you would like it to appear in the image.

  2. Press the Print Screen It may also be labelled Print Scr, Prnt Scr, or PrtScn.
    • The Print Screen key is located near the F12 key on most keyboards.
  3. Open MSPaint.

  4. Click the Edit menu and then Paste.
    • If MSPaint asks if you want to enlarge the bitmap, click Yes.
  5. Use the Crop tool if necessary.

  6. Click Save (or select File > Save) to save your screenshot as a JPG file.

    Mac instructions

    Full screen capture

    1. Open the program or applications you'd like to include in the screenshot. Arrange your screen as you would like it to appear in the image.

    2. Press Command + Shift + 3 and then release all keys.

    3. Look on your desktop for a new PNG file* that contains “Screen Shot” in the title. This is the screenshot you just took.

    4. Double click the file to open it and review the image.

    *If you run into size limitations, re-save your screenshot as a JPG file.

    Partial screen capture

    1. Open the program or applications you'd like to include in the screenshot.

    2. Press Command + Shift + 4 and then release all keys. Your mouse cursor will turn into crosshairs that you can move around.

    3. Drag the cursor to where you want to take the screenshot and click and drag the mouse over the area you'd like to capture.

    4. Release the mouse button when your selection is complete.

    5. Look on your desktop for a new PNG file* that contains “Screen Shot” in the title. This is the screenshot you just took.

    6. Double click the file to open it and review the image.

    *If you run into size limitations, re-save your screenshot as a JPG file.

    Please note: Some games have their own process for capturing screen shots and may save them in a special folder unique to the game. Please refer to your individual game instructions for information on special processes.

    To post a screen on AHQ select 'Choose File' option below the post box:

    Find the file/screen shot on your computer by selecting the Choose file again:

    Once the image uploads and is displayed below the open window select 'Insert Image':

    You can still add text to the post, but once you are finished, just hit Submit 🙂
