Hi! I'm a beginner. Trying to build a river, but I don't know how. The only way is through connecting lakes? Do I have to buy each lake separately, or can I buy just 1 and extend it somehow? Lakes are expensive and they cost in SimCash (most difficult currency to get)

Ponds will work too, and quite often Lakes are offered as prizes in Mayor's Pass events, Design Challenges, and other Event Tracks. But yes, you must use multiple bodies of water and connect them.

I'm not certain what country you're in, or if you're familiar with Black Friday, but Black Friday is the Day after U.S. Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, and for several days after, be sure to log in each day. SimCity BuildIt usually offers a single daily Specialization sale where all, or nearly all items in that Specialization will be offered at a 50% discount. (i.e. Beach, Gambling, Transportation, Parks, Landscape, etc.) Keep earning and saving those keys!...The annual sale should begin in about 11 1/2 weeks.
(I don't work for EA and I am not making a promise here, I'm just basing this on what's been offered in years past. And yes, The Delta has been offered at 50% off at that time too.😉)
