If this does not improve when switching between mobile data/wifi or between wifi networks, it is not the server.
Research is indicating a multi-factorial problem with many iOS devices becoming obsolete and specific issues involving game mode for the past year.

”Research is indicating a multi-factorial problem with many iOS devices becoming obsolete and specific issues involving game mode for the past year.“ - what does this gobbledygook mean?

It means... Since last year, reports show game mode, an iOS specific feature has caused issues (despite its design) negatively affecting connection services (lag) since iOS 18, which coupled with other things can cause crashing, freezing, etc.
- Check to see if Apple provides essential services for your device. For instance, iPhone 11 no longer receives crucial updates since last year.
- If turning Game Mode off worsens the matter, more troubleshooting is required.
- First, try playing on a different network, if it improves... It's the server.
- Second, go to Settings--> General-->Background Apps Refresh... If it is on, turn it off
Also, you could try any of these things out of order. They would all be beneficial.
If these don't work, let me know.

- Yes they do. My iPad is on the latest software update.
- if game mode off then fault still happens.
- it happens whatever network I’m on.
- background apps refresh is turned off.
