Resolution means toolbar and other icons too zoomed out

After the 5th person I spoke to from EA proved unable to sort my issue out, I was told to post my issue on here.

I recently reinstalled Simcity to this laptop which has a 1920x1080 screen resolution. My Simcity is set to this however the toolbar, settings and other icons are zoomed out so that you have to squint to read text. However, the landscape is fine. Zooming in or out via the mouse cursor does not bring the toolbar etc any closer. I have attached picture files so that you can see what I am talking about. I know that how zoomed out it is isn't normal since I've played it on this computer in that resolution without issues before.

I was told to change the resolution but this doesn't change the toolbar and obviously doesn't make the game as enjoyable as it isn't fullscreen.

I followed instructions to delete all of origins and simcity's cache, restart, use cc clean up thing, uninstall the game and reinstall it but none of them have obviously worked.

I now can't play the game so have paid for something that I can't even use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • So EA, now I'm really mad, because not only have you not helped with my simcity issue or responded to this like you said you would, but whatever you made me do yesterday has now messed up my sims 3 game also, good job!! Are you actually going to deal with this??

  • Check your settings under Gameplay. Do you have the Planning Mode Camera checkbox checked? Try unchecking or checking and see if that helps. It's kind of a long shot, but the only setting in-game that might make a difference. Double-check your display settings - right-click on the desktop, choose display settings, and make sure that under scale and layout you're not changing the size of text and apps. Also, are you running in compatibility mode? Double-check the properties of your SimCity icon and Origin icon to be sure that you haven't inadvertently checked any of the graphics settings under the compatibility tab. It's strange that changing the resolution doesn't change the toolbar size - it should.

You recently reinstalled the game - what OS are you running? what graphics card?

Are you running the Windows 10 Creator update version? This may work if you are running the newest Windows 10 version (and if you recently updated, probably the reason that you didn't have the problem before):

Go to SimCity.exe (default location is \Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCity for 64 bit), right-click SimCity.exe > Properties > Compatibility tab. Check the box that says "Override high DPI scaling method". That opens up a dropdown right below it - change to "System" instead of "Application". That should scale the game text properly.

If it works, you can do the same with the exe files for Origin and your sims 3.

Thank you for your response and help on both of these! I have an AMD Radeon graphics card and Windows 10 home I believe, used their website to find the answer; downloaded something from there. Even though my laptop is 1920x1080 I am now running both sims 3 and simcity in resolutions lower than that and yet they are still fullscreen; no black round the edges and the toolbar etc are not zoomed out like they were before. It's really strange as before I reinstalled them they were both on 1920x1080. Don't know how they're fixed but they are!

    Thanks again for the response!
