Feature Suggestion: Leaderboards

TL;DR:
With the new addition of "Speedline" Challenges and "Leaderboards" being On The Radar, I wanted to add to the discussion around future roadmaps. The new challenges create an opportunity to build on something unique.

Description:
Competitive systems remain one of the most frequently requested features, so I wanted to add to the discussion around future roadmaps.

Competition gives players something to chase.  It turns open-ended gameplay into repeatable engagement that repeats value, drives social interaction, and strengthens content ecosystems. Without it, players explore, consume content and leave; With it, they stay to improve, complete and build identity.

The new "Speedline" Challenges are the perfect fit for Leaderboards.  I was originally dismissive to the new Speedline Challenges, but there's a clear opportunity to build on something unique.

How it works:

  • Players compete for rankings based on challenge type or location
  • Leaderboards track the best completion time or highest score
  • Multiple leaderboard categories support different play-styles
    • Best Speedline = Time Trials
    • Best Sequence = Highscores

Below is a quick mock-up animation showcasing the concept.

Note: I also worked on a 'Statistic Tracking' concept with the current UI and inspiration from legacy titles, I'll share that separately. This system uses existing UI patterns present in "Settings" & "Throwdowns".

Why it's useful:

  • Players return to beat times or improve their best score instead of treating challenges as one-and-done.
  • Leaderboards naturally create rivalry between friends, while generating a range of social content throughout the community. (ie; YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
  • Mastery becomes meaningful when performance is tracked and ranked.

Optional:

  • Filters for "Global" or "Friends Only".
  • Separate leaderboards by challenge type. (ie; Speedline, Session, Stunt, etc.)
  • Seasonal resets or limited-time event leaderboards.

In this video Zexy mentions he was originally disappointed to hear that a new game mode was being introduced rather than legacy game modes, until he tried it. As he plays through the challenges, he also discusses Competition & Leaderboards. Shoutout Calpex.
