Things done well this event that I wanted to highlight
So, I have my gripes with the level of communication we've received until recently, and even recently I really disagree with the messaging and social media follow ups we've gotten, especially with the studio going back on their word with paywalls, however temporary they may be. WITH THAT SAID, I'm still having fun and while I'm making it known what I think is wrong with the game, I thought it'd be a good idea to highlight what I think this event has done right compared to past ones in hopes we see them continue this direction.
- Time from announcement to being playable: Over the last 6 months I have had casual friends I've invited to play with me hit me up to ask about the latest news they saw on social media or their steam feed. They'll express interest and I have to point out that the blog states the event won't be starting for a few days to a week. 100% of the time, regardless of how big a skate fan my friends are or what kind of other games they have occupying their time, they were disappointed and their interest fizzled. The immediate turnaround is great, we all expect these events to be coming around holidays and real-life seasons anyway so there's no need for the build up when people are probably more excited to jump in as soon as they hear about it.
- Collecting everything: I know this event is only a week so those circumstances changed things up a little but being able to collect everything with event currency without relying on multiple days of free currency is a huge win for players that you guys deserve credit for. Some of these challenges are tough, some of them are easy, but regardless of difficulty no one wants to go through a checklist and still feel like they didn't complete what they set out to do. I completed all the tasks and finished all the challenges and had just barely enough to cover everything on day one and that felt more than fair. Having lots of options to dress up for an event on day 1 not only feels good but might even encourage players to mix and match with other shop items over the remainder of the event. I really implore you guys to find a way to give us as much as possible without feeling like we have to log in for a few extra days just for a shirt, or pair of leggings or clogs, etc.
- The parks feeling bespoke: These have improved a ton and maybe it's because the event was new but I was seeing a ton of traffic at the community parks whereas every event before this would still have a huge congregation at Rolling Waves regardless of how many servers I joined. Yesterday if I was in San Van I consistently saw most of the player dots grouped up at the community parks and I think that's great.
- Actually decent cosmetics: Maybe it's because it's been a tumultuous time for the game with the recent controversies that plague the mainstream discussion surrounding skate, but I'm glad we got some wearable stuff that wouldn't feel out of place outside the event. Obviously the leggings and clogs and even the stuff that overtly says "Skate/sk8 Paddy's" are a little costumey, but the vest was a great addition that I can see people wearing any time, and even the wheels were solid. I still think prices for the premium event items is a little ridiculous, especially when they're made for a single day or week, but even if the vest was only meant to be a gesture of goodwill with what's been going, I'm glad for it. I know some people may point out the vest we earned by completing everything in the Spring Pop-Off event but that in no way felt tied to the event we were all "participating" in. This event's vest feels festive and neutral enough to still stand on its own.
- Incorporating the event into the city: This is something I've seen requested from the start, from Jack-O-Lanterns littering the streets to Christmas lights being strung up across town, people want the event to actually feel like one. Until now they've felt almost like theme parks, you basically can't participate until you enter one of the sanctioned areas made specifically to "celebrate." I think the green canal was a really great start that makes the rest of the city feel like it's participating too. If this city is run by skaters, then the ones hosting these events shouldn't shy about spreading the message across town. More of this for sure.
Please communicate with us better and more, but for now I'm happy with how this event turned out and really hope to see you guys tap into these points even further. Thanks for listening on this stuff.
