when Skate 1 came out it was revolutionary. Everyone agreed this is much more interesting than button controls that have been common until then. „perfectly fine“ doesn't mean it's the only right way for almost 20 years during which the real life skate culture itself vastly changed. Take a moment. Go through the years. Freestyle, Vert, Tony Hawk, 900, X Games, Ryan Sheckler, higher, faster, perfect tricks...uhhh Bam Margera?? Partying?? Skate movies??? risk breaking every bone to have clip in it? would be metal though. New Hip Hop! a bunch of New Hip Hops at the same time! Shake Junt? Neen Williams - pressing the heelflip button better than you on a controller. Beagle? does manuals and and 50-50s on curbs.
no buttons. that's a flick guy and also Beagle. legend. Bigger shirts! smaller shirts! Tony Hawk's Story mode. slightly more buttons. Tony Hawk's Pro a bunch of things. Tony Hawk's late mid 30s punk rebel Phase. Totally on brand for worlds oldest teenager. Hate it or love it. Out of buttons? More trick per button. Now check this out: Tony Hawk's 10th anniversary of perfectly fine not so fine anymore less buttony looking still buttons except for a good 3 seconds of clicky sticks? gimmicky flicks? clock ticks. Ding Dong! More like Tony's Unc now. The only button you need for now is for moving forward. There's more buttons but you'll get there after you learned about 20 of the buttons in the right stick. No button to land so spin less buttony to land. spin less looks better than spin more? what's that? FREEDOM!
I've been skating for a long time too, of course you can't fit full body movement into mostly the right stick but i think the flick motions do fit the tricks quite good. and you know whats better than a button doing the exact same action every time? FREEDOM of movement. yeah, the flips were almost the same every time too - turns out Ollie FREEDOM means FREEDOM flips too! rolling of a ledge? perfectly fine kickflip but FREE to save your energy on the flick. also looks cooler. Skaters wanted it. Button Game players didn't know they wanted it. Some mad at themselves 20 years of playing perfectly fine doesn't translate to sudden buttonloss. perfectly fine backflip. less buttons. 3 dimensional rotational freedom. Only get one of those per buttonless liftoff. know what? FREEDOM. flickless liftoff. freedom of landing or not landing it. going for either? might end up with the other. looks insanely hard. freedom of lying. meant to do that. still easy to pick up - hard to master. fun fact: a solid crowd of 5 button gamers still mastered their teens and decided to master button game beyond the mind of teenage game development. Tony Hawk's new teenage game makers. Chants of "Teenagers can't do anything these days". Tony clueless. Has yet to complete the first game. Teenager, not a loser. looks like both can co exist.
The flick it controls are a core element of the skate brand, that's why they added even more freedom. even slower flips. learning the word quintuple after an awfully long quad kickflip. No more rules to grinds. Grab variations. Tilt your board to slide out 360s to keep the steeze. wanna do a kinda-suski-5-0? push the stick where you want. transition between grinds while staying on the rail.
„you can do that in tony hawks pro skater with the way better BUTTONS“ yeah? does it look smooth? do you know all the X-Y, Y-Y combinations to do something on purpose for once? i feel like Nyjah Huston might be the only skater who likes buttons. he skates like it.
Haven't heard any other skater genuinely complain about a control scheme designed for it. The game with buttons is still alive. Dell Laptop you got for college? runs it. Phone? runs it. Hated American Wasteland? Get Tony Hawk's Underground. Download THUG Pro. 20 Years of button worlds in the same button game. Customize the way you button. Loved American Wasteland? Download it. Install ReTHAWed. 20 years of button game worlds + a world from 3D animated toy cowboy button game. completely understand if you're unhappy with the remaster of Pro skater 3+4 but instead you complain about the improved controls of a fundamentally seperate skating game experience for not having BUTTON controls? the only reason i didn't complain about the option to enable one of your buttons to ollie - is because there are less fortunate people who deserve to join in on the fun regardless of their physical limitations. Doesn't seem like your limitations are of physical nature but maybe getting at least one button lifts up your board and your mood.
