Battlefront 2 Crashing upon startup

Hey all

Suddenly having a weird crash issue. Game will no longer start up properly. Earlier today I had no problems playing although I did experience a couple of weird issues where the game would sometimes freeze then crash at random times in the game.

Now I can't launch the game properly anymore. What happens is the game launches and it'll start loading then after a few seconds it'll stop. Have tried deleting the local settings in documents, updated my drivers and used GeForce to switch back and forth optimisation settings.

The furthest I've gotten it to work is just a second after the main menu loads. As soon as the character and other parts of the main menu appears, the game freezes then quits without any errors. That's only happened a couple of times. Most times I start the game it tries loading and then the game quit after a few seconds. Playing on a 4K monitor with a gigabyte oc rtx2070 super so the hardware isn't the problem.

Any ideas ☹️?

  • There is a thing as having too much "unlimited power"

This problem only seems to happen if you have an overclocked your GPU using an overclocking app like msi afterburner, aorus engine etc) or you just have an OC graphics card installed in your desktop setup

My Graphics Card: Gigabyte RTX 2070 super gaming OC

UPDATE #2: Fixed the problem and made the game stable

The Problem: Game would occasionally freeze and go to desktop without any errors. This is a different problem and can be fixed by capping your FPS or due to lack of Power Supply (links below). The main problem was one of these crash instances left it so the game wouldn't launch past the trooper background and could only go as far as the main menu screen. I later traced my steps back and remembered I accidentally changed the memory clock on my graphics card using AORUS engine.

It's also worth noting that I did do the usual recommendation of deleting my local settings, repairing game files, clearing cache etc but those did not work.

    The fix:

    1. Open up whatever overclocking application you used (e.g msi afterburner)

    2. Turn down any overclocked settings all the way down. For me, I'm using aorus engine

and turned downed GPU boost, Memory Clock and Power Target (50%) the lowest it could go. I recommend

you experiment turning down each setting 1 by 1 as lowering gpu boost and memory clock alone

helped me to get past the loading screen but still crashed before the main menu could load.

It was only when I turned down the power target to as low as it could go that it worked.

    3. Disable any overlays you might have whether it be discord, rivatuner statistics server,

    shadowplay etc

    4. Start up game and check to see if you can load into arcade or  something successfully

    5. If yes, quickly change any in-game settings to match the resolution on your monitor. For me, I set it to 4K as per my monitor resolution.

    6. Close Game

    7. Reset my overclocked settings (Memory, GPU, Power etc) back to its default values using

the "default" or "reset" button on AORUS engine or in this case, your overclocking application.

    8. Launched Game successfully into arcade/mutiplayer again

P.S If your game is working but you occasionally freeze and crash, just follow the instructions below on capping your FPS.

I also uninstalled the game and installed the game again before doing the fix above. This isn't necessary in my opinion

but if the fix above does not work, it might be worth a try but you likely you'll end up with the same issues as before.

it's a weird solution but it worked for me. I was able to play all day without having a single crash when capping my FPS.

I will continue to experiment on and off but so far it seems to be stable when you cap your FPS. Hope this helps!

  • First idea is to search the forum for others who have had this issue.

Second idea is your video drivers... I actually had to roll mine back (i.e. current messed it up) at one point. It was temporary, as subsequent driver corrected itself.

Likewise there may be another driver that's now causing some issues. The game has not been updated in weeks, so...

Third, check the dust in your system. I had your issue with a different game. The fan on the graphics card had too much dust - i.e. couldn't spin fast enough to cool the card.

  • @DarthFDG Hey so I've tried pretty everything I could find on the fourms here and elsewhere. I don't think it would actually be a video driver issue since it only just happened today right after a normal crash. I'll try to give it a wipe now. Also out of curosity, was your graphics card overclocked? I think It might have something to do with me accidentally changing the memory clock on my graphics card after the crash but I've already changed it to the default values.

It was not overclocked - just had a bunch of dust on it.

  • UPDATE: Found a potential fix but will need to do further testing

Wish I hadn't uninstalled the game prior to this. Have only tested this in arcade mode but will test if playing on multiplayer is stable.

I re-traced my steps and tried to remember anything I did that might've caused the game to crash. If you have a GPU that you have overclocked you're bound to have issues with this game. I personally never overclocked mine but the graphics card I bought came with some default overclocked settings by default.

How I sorta fixed the crash upon startup issue (for now).....

    1. Opened up AOROUS engine (overclocking application similar to msi afterburner)

    2. Turned down any overclocked settings all the way down. For me, I turned downed

GPU boost, Memory Clock and Power Target (50%) the lowest it could go. I recommend

you experiment turning down each setting 1 by 1 as lowering gpu boost and memory clock alone

helped me to get past the loading screen but still crashed before arcade could load.

It was only when I turned down the power target to as low as it could go that it worked.

    3. Started up game and was able to load onto the arcade screen successfully this time

    4. Quickly changed my in-game settings to Ultra and 4K resolution as per my monitor res.

    5. Closed Game

    6. Reset my overclocked settings (Memory, GPU, Power etc) back to its default values using

the "default" or "reset" button on AORUS engine.

    7. Launched Game successfully into arcade again

it's a weird solution but it worked for me.

I still had at least 1 crash during the arcade match but I think that's another issue

that could be due to insufficient power supply or capping your game FPS to 60.

Haven't been able to test this out yet but it could explain why my game would

sometimes randomly freeze and then exit to desktop during matches

Read these two posts I found to see what I mean
