Battlefront 2 Stuttering

Hello all.

First off, here’s my system:

Windows 10

AMD Ryzen 3900x

ROG GeForce RTX 2080ti OC 11GB

Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2

16GB ram

I’ve just recently completed my new PC build and am having issues with Battlefront.  I’m getting terrible stuttering which renders the game completely unplayable. While this stuttering is happening my character also starts going in circles(at a glorious 4fps) despite the fact that I am not pressing the controller in that direction. As well, sometimes the game will simply not load at all. It seems to be a hit or a miss whether I can even load the game or not.

In another forum I saw another user mention running PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1 to get a true reading of your FPS without running an overlay. I have been running the game full screen, at 4K, 3440x1440, ultra settings for everything. If I have resolution scale set to 100 I’m getting anywhere between 140-150fps on average. I can have it set to 156 and get 60-70fps(I have no idea if this is good or not and if my system should be able to achieve better).

With PerfOverlay running I can see what happens when the stuttering starts. The FPS for the CPU drops from 100 to 4, the sim drops to 4(I have no idea what the sim means). When it first starts the GPU FPS remains good and then a second or two later the GPU FPS drops to about 25. It appears that on my system this is more of a CPU issue?

I'm not running an overlay, I’ve got my GPU set at factory settings and is not over locked, Xbox game bar is turned off, I’m not running directx 12. BIOS is up to date, used GeForce experience to update to the latest GPU drivers. Windows is completely up to date.

What I did notice made a moderate difference in the frequency of the stuttering was to delete the Star Wars folder under user/documents and then repair the game in Origin. I’d say it’s happening half as often, but still at least once or twice per match, if I can load the game at all.

I must also say that I did notice this happening after a program was installed on my computer for work. The first night I was running Battlefront for a couple of hours without any issues whatsoever, next day work program is installed and I’m having issues. It’s also worth noting that I tried installing and playing Modern Warfare and was unable to play it due to Dev error 6068.

If it was strictly my computer that’s having issues with the stuttering I’d chock it up to my work software causing issues. But looking around this issue with battlefront seems to be fairly prevalent, so is the issue with Modern Warfare. I’m to the point that I feel like buying another 970 EVO Plus and doing a fresh install on it to see if it makes any difference or not. If it does, great! Work software might be the issue. If it doesn’t, well... my MB can handle two M.2 drives.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Hello there @ErmagerdUzername

Thanks for the very detailed breakdown on what is going on with SWBF2 for you!

When playing have you had a look incase anything is overheating or anything going to 100% usage while playing and what kind of power supply do you have?

  • Hi.

i can’t remember exactly what CPU usage was but it was low, I want to say in the 20% range. As far as overheating the hottest my GPU got was 60C. Power supply is a Corsair CX 850.

    Hi @ErmagerdUzername ,

I am having stuttering and unplayable performance with Battlefront 2 as well.  My system setup is as follows:

    Ryzen 5 3600

    16GB DDR4 3600

    Asus X570 Mobo

    RTX 2080 OC

    Samsung EVO 970 Plus SSD

For much of the game I was getting 4 to 35 FPS in 1900x1080 resolution using DX12 and was stuttering so badly I could see the frames refresh one by one.  This is not acceptable as my i7 7700HQ laptop with a GTX 1080MQ was easily averaging 60-100 fps without stuttering.

I tried different settings in the bios, including PBO, overclocking, for few days without much success.  I progressed through the game using my i7 laptop.

But finally I found the problem.  Disable SMT!!!!

It appears that AMD's version of hyperthreading, SMT, is incompatible with the game engine.  Disabling SMT now allows me to hit 100 fps in 2560x1440 where I was previously barely getting 30fps in 1920x1080.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks, I’ll look into it and try it.

Another thing I’ve noticed... I use a controller to play the game. When it starts stuttering I put new batteries into my controller and the stuttering goes away. This has happened several times now where I replace the batteries and it stops stuttering so I don’t thinks it’s just a coincidence. The batteries aren’t actually dead yet but  maybe it’s low enough that it’s causing some kind of issue?
