Pressing "A" implies you want to change characters. Simply put, do not press A after a death. If you do get caught in the change characters screen, press B to unselect your hero, you should then be able to select any character not currently in play, including the one you were just using. Hope this helps!
@grimmace2 The only way to access the six second timer that was implemented a few patches ago was to hit "A" or "X" (on PlayStation). Watch the video in the thread. It shows that your workaround doesn't apply.
What I suggested was not a work around, it was being fast. You still have to press A (XBox) to access the change character screen, but you have to be over your current character and press B very quickly to get it to release your character. Then you can change. If you wait too long to press A, no luck. If you wait too long to press B, no luck. You have to do the steps very quickly to get them to register.
You must not have played in a few weeks. Seriously, try that now, or make a vid of you doing so. Your method worked before this latest patch.
I tried to experience this BUG but it didn't happen to me. The character I was using was available when I got back to selection screen.
I'll try it further the next time I can get my hands on the game
