Persistent GPU induced freezing (PC)

GTX 1080 Ti, already underclocked, under full water block, 1.062v, display driver 397.64 (clean installed) induced full system lock ups where the game freezes and the audio bugs and the only thing to do is hard reset the PC.

I already have the game's .exe set to "Prefer Max Performance" in Nvidia Control Panel and set to "Run as admin".

I don't know what else to do at this point, every other game I have can happily run at 2000 MHz with load temps of 40C but this game is special. Shall I try for 1950 MHz? Special game built by special ed devs needs special attention I suppose.

DX12 is disabled.

Update:

This just happened with the GPU at factory clocks about 5 minutes into a session, i.e. +0 core, +0 memory. This happens with MSI Afterburner closed. This happens with the game's .exe set to "Run as Administrator" under Properties > Compatibility. I don't know what to do at this point.

DxDiag.txt attached.

Edit:

I wonder if this issue is across all platforms? Both Xbox and PS4 owners are basically complaining about the same problem, except for them their entire system doesn't lock up, the game just closes:

Actually now that I think about it, I'm associating the issue with multiplayer but the recent update rolled out right after I finished the single player campaign and it's probably actually related to the update and not the play mode.

  • Thanks for the help everyone, just an update:

I found out what the issue was, and I got a hint of it rather early on. I had an inkling that it was CPU vcore early on and I raised that 10mv in BIOS before booting and erroneously, determined that it wasn't the issue as I got another lock-up so I returned it to where it was Prime95 and OCCT stable -5mv (yes, this game sets the new standard in terms of CPU stability testing) Somewhere in the process I was also reducing my GPU overclocks, and a day had gone by and the next time I attempt to play I noticed that I got a crash even faster, this time within 5-10 minutes. Well, today I increased the voltage with Gigabyte's EasyTune app, from 1.35 to 1.39v and I just played for an entire hour without a crash. I'm left to conclude that the crashing wasn't GPU related, even though it appeared to be (usually, if it's CPU related it's a BSOD, not the game freezing with loud buzzing noise being emitted from the speakers / headphones).

If anyone else is having this issue check your CPU vcore.

  • The recent update ruined the game for many, i can't even play multiplayer because of "Error 1066" which is just being ignored with blanket fixes.

Back to the point however i am assuming it is solely this game, if so reinstall would be the first approach. My 1080ti has been running fine and averages around 48C in this game.

Make sure all your NVIDIA Settings are set to GPU not CPU. Update your drivers if you have not already, not just GPU but everything else as well. Check task manager just for broad readings on what is maxing out when these errors happen.

You can do digging with through DxDiag and crash logs yourself, it takes awhile but just a lot of reading. Support might take awhile to respond. When i hear system lock up and audio bugs i think RAM/CPU over GPU but you seem convinced it is GPU.

Also if you have not already try running in windows 7 compatibility mode.

Side note: Consider what  programs are running in the background and make sure they are not conflicting with BF2.

    @Vulcan1978

You are getting errors with Windows.UI.Immersive.dll, which is a system file and running System File Checker could repair that:

Run System File Checker to ensure the integrity of your Windows System files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

It is probably worthwhile checking for motherboard driver updates, your audio drivers are a little old.

Let us know if these steps have any effect for you, thanks.

  • Hey Vulcan,

I have a MSI GTX 1080 with factory OC and get constant hickups in SWBF2. I also suspected the GPU at first, but seems more like a connection issue as it mostly happens in multiplayer. Also, I've never gotten a full lock up and your temps seem way lower than mine (everything aircooled here), so I guess your issue is probably something else

However, another way to check if your GPU clock speeds are causing the issues is to turn on "debug mode" in the nvidia control panel. By doing so, you're forcing the card to run at reference clock speeds, all factory OC will be deactivated as long as you're running in debug mode. Some games are very sensitive to OC / clock speed fluctuations and SWBF2 is very demanding, so it may be worth a try.

NV control panel > Help > Debug Mode
