Just got upgraded to level 3 defender, thought I'd give it another whirl.  Now I get points, so I'm not sure if it got fixed or what.  However, it does seem you need to be carrying a sheild, either original or upgraded, in order for it to work.  As you do not actually have to deploy the shield to get defender points, I would say that this ability is still broken.  So if you equip the ion turret or barrage to replace the shield, the card does not work.  So either the card needs to state outright that the shield is required, or the connection between shield and defender must be severed, since it is nonsensical to have to carry something you are not using in order to make another ability work.
