squad shield not affecting lightsabers or force powers

Product: Star Wars Battlefront II
Platform:Sony Playstation 4
What is your issue related to? General
Summarize your bug Squad shield, whether trooper or Leia, does not work against lightsabers or offensive force abilities, such as force lightning
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? Daijooky
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Can you tell us the date (MM/DD/YYYY) that you saw the bug? 01/03/2019
What time did you see the bug? (HH:MM AM/PM) 22:15
In what game mode did the bug occur? Heroes vs. Villains
What is your time zone? EST (IET) - GMT - 5:30
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Have someone use any hero with the force, Emperor, Luke etc, and have them go against Leia or an Officer and try to use Squad shield to stop a lightsaber or force power
What happens when the bug occurs? The squad shield is utterly useless and might as well not be up. Though it still does work versus blasters and thrown objects
What do you expect to see? As in all of canon the one thing that can stop force users are force fields. Making it so that the squad shield reacts to lightsabers and offensive force abilities as it does versus blaster fire and explosions is only logical .

I may have posted this at one time but as I've stated above, it makes no sense that Squad Shield ability has absolutely no effect against lightsabers or offensive force abilities. Instead, if you put one up you may as well have put up some wet tissue paper, as sabers and force lightning/push ignore it completely. Considering that in every single Star Wars story utilizing force fields in one way or another, was the one equalizing factor non-force users had against force users it makes no sense that squaad shield doesn't work against them in some manner. Droidekas ring a bell. I'm not saying a squad shield should stop them dead, just that it react to force abilities and lightsabers just like it does against blaster fire and grenades.

The shield in Battlefront II is more aimed to be used in infantry game modes, such as GA and Strike. The fact that Leia has a squad shield really helps when securing objectives in GA for example, because enemies cannot shoot the players inside.

I see in your bug report that you aimed your feedback at the HvV mode, and I wholeheartedly agree. Although in practice, Leia's shield can be used to escape from blaster enemies, the thing is utterly useless in both hero modes. Camping in a hero mode is just not worth it (not for Leia) and the shield is almost never used. At least, I don't.

Though, I am unsure that changing the mechanics of the squad shield would be the solution here. I don't think the shield needs to affect enemy lightsaber wielders since they can just walk inside and slaughter and stun lock you there. Also, I don't mind force powers not register through the shield, those have enough problems already, let's not make it even more complicated.

IMO, the best solution here is creating adjustable hero abilities that players can or cannot choose. So for example, players would have the option to equip Leia's shield for GA and then chose a different ability (maybe a melee weapon IDK, doesn't matter) to be selected for hero modes. This way, certain useless abilities can be used only in certain modes.

This is something that has been implemented already in SWBF I, in which Nien Numb had an ability with orbital strikes in Walker Assault while having mines in smaller modes. In this game, it wasn't possible to choose which ability you would have, but I think making it an option would be a better chose.

Just to note, this doesn't mean that I would like to see additional abilities for all the characters. Just for some of the most useless, never used in hero modes (or reversible in GA) ones. Such as Leia's shield and Phasma's staff.

Let me know what you think of that!

  • Also, if you want to know exactly what goes through shields, I found this video very interesting:

Biggest problem with Leia's shield in HvV is that people use it in really stupid ways.

For example, I am about to kill someone with Han/Lando etc., and then some kid places a shield on top of me - I'm sure he did it with good intentions, but all he does is prevent my ability to shoot while the melee heroes are closing in. This is also very annoying when the melee heroes are already there - and then they can utilise the shield perfectly by dodging in and out of it, while all my shots are getting blocked by it.

Leia is pretty powerful already, and the shield can be used cleverly in HvV, so I think the real problem is the unintentional blocking of friendlies.
