Turning off raw mouse input option breaks mouse movement

Product: Star Wars Battlefront II
Platform:PC
What is your issue related to? General
Summarize your bug This is the 1st time with any FrostBite game that I can't play with the raw mouse option off. I disabled raw mouse (yes I have my reasons, related to dyslexia) in the ProfileOptions_profile_synced folder: "GstInput.MouseRawInput 0" where it was at 1. Doing that sadly renders the mouse completely useless. It barely moves and it's twitchy and basically broken. I have been disabling raw mouse option with your games for years never an issue until now (BF3-BF4-BFH-SWBF-BF1). It was the same in the beta but I figured it would be fixed by launch. But no such luck. This is a huge problem for me. Please test it and fix it. Try disabling raw mouse and you'll see what I mean. I understand it probably won;t come to this but this whole issue can easily be corrected by adding invert Y AND invert X axis options in the game settings. Destiny 2 did it and it works great! invert X being the key function as invert Y is already there and quite common. Again, it's a dyslexia thing but others would need this for other reasons as well. thanks.

  • Windows 10 has issues with mouse movement when raw input is turned off in-games. Mainly on low sensitivity or DPI the mouse will hitch and not move properly, this may be the cause of your issue and seems to affect games across the board not just BF2. The issue does however seem to be improved on the insider preview builds not there may be other stability issues with those builds so caution is advised before using them. On the insider builds there also seems to be an issue where the mouse will randomly continue floating off in the direction you were moving it after you stop moving your mouse but this seems rare.

Hmm.. All I know is that this is the first game I've played with raw mouse off with this issue. Using Windows 10 I never had this issue with other EA/FrostBite titles such as Battlefield 1, SW:Battlefront 1, BFH, or BF4.

Furthermore I do not have this issue with the new Call of Duty WWII or Destiny 2. It is ONLY with SW:Battlefront 2!! So something needs to be done about this. The game is literally unplayable for me!!

But if this is indeed issue with Windows 10 (1st time I've encountered this problem, play many games on Windows10) Then the developers could resolve it easily by simply adding a "Invert X-axis" option in the settings on top of the already existing "Invert Y-axis".. That's exactly what they did in Destiny2.

Raw mouse on or off is a basic option available in many games for a long time now. they need to figure out a way to get this fixed. It really feels like a step backwards!

@PossiblyNotLegitI decided to put your theory to the test. I have another rig running Windows 7 so I installed SW:BF2 on that system to find out for sure if this is a Windows 10 OS issue as you are professing or if it's truly on the game's development side.

And after testing it I can tell you that it did the EXACT SAME THING ON WINDOWS 7!!  I set "GstInput.MouseRawInput" from 1 to 0 and it did the same thing as it did in Windows 10 (stuttery, stuck, broken mouse movement).

So I can say with absolute confidence that this is clearly a GAME BUG, NOT an OS issue and it needs to be fixed! There is absolutely no reason that your mouse movement should completely break because you disabled raw mouse input. Somebody on the team did not do their due diligence, that much is clear!

My only question now is how can I make sure that this gets to the right person at Dice/EA who can actually help get this corrected quickly?

Summarize your bug The raw mouse input function is currently broken, as in mouse look/movement does not work when you disable raw mouse input in the settings folder. Tested it on 2 computers, 2 different OS (Windows 10 + Windows 7), fresh install of game and origin, assured no other USB devices connected other than mouse + kb. Tested with standard mouse (Windows mouse driver) as well as gaming mouse (Roccat) no difference.

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Disable raw mouse input from the "ProfileOptions_Profile_Synced" folder in settings (path: Computer>Documents>Star Wars Battlefront 2>settings) Then play a game any mode and you will see that the mouse movement/look is broken. You can't look around as it freezes/stutters/stuck sensation.
What happens when the bug occurs? You can't look around with the mouse. The game becomes unplayable.
What do you expect to see? I expect what has always been the case with previous FrostBite engine EA games (BF1, SW:BF1, BFH, BF4) which is being able to play the game normally without mouse issues when turning raw mouse input off.

If you want to experience what I am describing, Set raw mouse input from "1" to "0" in the "ProfileOptions_Profile_Synced" folder in settings (path: Computer>Documents>Star Wars Battlefront 2>settings) Then play a game any mode and you will quickly realize that something is very wrong as the mouse look/movement becomes completely broken. You can't look around whatsoever, you are basically stuck with micro twitches and mouse stutters stuck in the same spot, not able to really turn around at all!

Some people need to play with raw mouse input turned off, all for different reasons. That's why it's been a standard feature, to have it enabled or not, in AAA games for many years now.  In my case it is because I am "mouse dyslexic" which means I need my mouse movement to go right when I move left, left when I move right; up when down and down when up. Disabling raw mouse allows me to do this via mouse the mouse software in Windows. This has NEVER been an issue with ALL OTHER FROSTBITE GAMES including the most recent titles, SW:BF1 and Battlefield 1.

A workaround that developers may want to consider is adding another option in the game controls: Invert X-axis. Invert Y-axis is already in there and has been for many titles now but not "Invert X-axis". That would allow you to invert the axis for both Y and X without having to worry about the raw mouse input. It is not uncommon to have an "invert X-axis" option. In fact, DESTINY 2 which was just released a couple of weeks ago indeed has both the Invert Y-axis AND Invert X-axis options in the in-game controls menu! So yes, it's a thing.

I hope we can all agree that this is kind of a big issue and leaving it as is would really be a step backwards considering this is a basic feature in games for literally years now. So, fixing the raw mouse input option in the settings folder or adding the "Invert X-axis" option in the game controls menu or preferably both, would resolve the issue for myself and for many others for all kinds of reasons.

@PossiblyNotLegit Do you have any other ideas? Can someone from the game development side maybe throw in some input? Again, there is absolutely NO reason why disabling raw mouse input should break the mouse look/movement.
