Unexplained Stuttering, Lag, and Rubberbanding - Battlefront 2

Battlefront 2 has been working great from the time I bought it way back in Nov. 2018. I have over 600 hours in this game, and I have never had a problem with it. Then, starting last January, the game will consistently stutter, freeze for about 3 seconds, stop playing sound, stop everything on screen including music (but I can move the camera), or all-together crash. It doesn't matter the map, character, mode, time of day, or the server that I'm on. About 1.5 seconds in between each stutter. It runs fantastic in Tutorial / Story mode (so I doubt it's the hardware), but once I join a multiplayer match or launch instant action, completely unplayable. What is happening?!

After checking Task Manager, the game will consistently use up 100% of the CPU even in the menu. There are no other processes running in the background, and I have disabled and reenabled so many different options. Rubber banding seems to partly be the issue, and I know lots of people have blamed it on EA's servers, which, I can totally understand. However, i don't hear about anyone else having this problem on PC. Videos of people using the EXACT same setup as me have had great performance of constant 60 FPS.

You name it, I've most likely tried it.

  • Turning down graphics settings, every option available.
  • Turned off "Share Usage Data" in EA Account Tab (I heard that slows down a ton)
  • Changed servers with the in-game options.
  • Restarted the computer multiple times.
  • Reinstalled BF2 multiple times.
  • Rebooted my router multiple times.
  • Changed power settings to max performance, power saver, and balanced.
  • Verified game files / Repaired game files
  • Overclocking CPU / GPU
  • Checked all other background programs.
  • Looked up various video guides and other people's threads with common problems (no "fixes" have worked).

Today I checked my internet speeds and ping. I've attached the DxDiag file. Here's a breakdown of my PC build:

Graphics Card = Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (With updated drivers 27.21.14.5751)

Processor = Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20 GHz 3.20 GHz

RAM = 8.00 GB

OS = Windows 10 64-bit, x64-based processor

Monitor = Acer H2332H HDMI

Ping = 4

Download Speed = 280.58 mb/s

Upload Speed = 370.25 mb/s

I did notice that my GPU usage is at almost 0% all the time, while the CPU is close to 100% in game. Bottleneck? I don't understand why it would work before, then suddenly decide to die out of nowhere...

Please, any help is greatly appreciated. I've been after this problem for an insane amount of time.

Thanks,

A Concerned Player

UPDATE: Many months later, the problem still persists. Any and all help is appreciated. I also realize that Battlefront 2 has had it's support ended. I still love the game and I always find full lobbies in various game modes. Running out of options here, and this is getting ridiculous.

  • Hey @Darth_Revan64  thanks for all the details, helps a lot.

    Your CPU is below minimum Requirements and as you noticed its usage is 100%. Frostbite games in general do use a lot of CPU power to run. There is not much you can do then getting a stronger CPU.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Spoiler
    OS: 64-bit Windows 7 SP1/Windows 8.1/Windows 10
    Processor (AMD): AMD FX 6350
    Processor (Intel): Intel Core i5 6600K
    Memory: 8GB RAM
    Graphics card (AMD): AMD Radeon™ HD 7850 2GB
    Graphics card (NVIDIA): NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 660 2GB
    DirectX: 11 Compatible video card or equivalent
    Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection
    Hard-drive space: 60GB

  • @EA_Atic  While that logic makes perfect sense, it doesn't explain why the game has run perfectly fine up until this year. I haven't had any problems running the game with this processor in the past. I also suspect it could be a server connection issue, but my internet speeds listed above don't show any problems.

    @Darth_Revan64 We had a few patches in the earlier this year, we make sure everything works for the minimum spec but that means it can stop working for hardware below.

    Or other items, there are many factors to why a game stops working.

  • I had the same problem and actually just made a post about it a few minutes before making this reply. It worked fine on my old hardware and started stuttering out of nowhere in late 2019. I made some hefty upgrades and nothing changed... :/
