Well, have I got some (hopefully) good news for you! If you go into the game settings and turn on 'cross play', it actually finds a game. Only downside is that you kind of have to activate it - even if you'd rather not play with cross play. Until matchmaking is improved, this seems like the only solution. Yip its the cross play, on PS4 make sure that cross play is switched on. This way you and friend can play online in game. Even if you and your friend have PS4's cross play has to be on.
