i played those games strictly offline. 36.6k modem meant online play was... slideshow sometimes.
but mainly the reason i didnt play much of them was i kept going back to the wing commander games particularly 3, 4 and prophecy which were some of the first games where the endings could be different depending how you acted or interacted in battle or with other characters on the carrier. that was new back then for games. long way from asteroids too.
you can even get the wing commander games on origin, but i had problems getting WC3 and WC4 to even run under win 10, and while WC Prophecy works its not really playable for me with mouse keys, and i only have controller not joystick to play otherwise. thats the same reason i dont buy the original xwing etc on steam.
plus it annoyed me that the origin guy sold the company to EA part way through the series. WC prophecy ends on a cliff hangar which never got resolved because EA in those days was run by some rapacious pro exec with no understanding of games, just profits, and so when EA bought a rival software company it was just to asset strip the staff and close the studio. the executive who did that killed Wing Commander, and the guy who used to own the series wasted the money he got on a bad Wing Commander movie. now hes doing some kickstarter thing called star - citizen or something, which looks like it will never quite get to beta test stage.
actually since im on nostalgia, the only online game i was hooked on was quake. it was seriously insane with so many hackers, mods and so on being used, you had a ttk of about 0.01 s with any weapon from some players!
but yeah, i loved being a rebel pilot flying around and seeing real star destroyers. i just wish the control setup on controller was more like the setup ace combat 7 uses.
