first mission freeze when learning about request resupply

What were you doing when the bug occurred? Step by Step detail is helpful. First campaign mission, when I get to the point where it wants to teach me about requesting resupply. It asks me to hold [joystick button 1] to request a resupply but then freezes whether or not I do that. The freeze happens while the the instructions overlay is on screen.

I am unable to complete the first campaign mission from my current save. I have tried resuming multiple times, including after updating graphics drivers and after rebooting my PC.
In the first campaign mission you eventually take a hyperspace jump to a gas giant system and the game tries to teach you about requesting resupply. The game pauses and an overlay comes up that first talks about resupply and asks me to hit [joystick button 1] to continue. After I press it, the overlay asks me to actually request the resupply by holding [joystick button 1]. Around this time, whether or not I hold the button, the game freezes unrecoverably. To exit I have to use alt-f4 or the task manager.
I have not yet tested *restarting* the first campaign mission, I will do so when I'm next able to play.
Update: restarting the mission entirely did not solve the problem. BUT, when I got to the freeze, I pressed a random key on my keyboard and it changed to prompting me to press a keyboard key [6] instead of a joystick button. When I pressed the keyboard key, the game unfroze.
