GPU for VR

Trying to upgrade my rig for VR for squadrons. Looking at graphics cards, the RX580 and the GeForce 1660 super are the top choices for my price range. After much scouting around the web it would seem the consensus is the 1660 is better than the Rx570 (which is recommended by name in the specs) but is NOT an equivalent to the 1070. So just curious if anyone can help steer me in the right direction. Thanks!

  • @CromsLaughter I would personally wait a month or 2 to upgrade. There is a new range of graphics cards coming out around the same time as the new consoles for nVidia and AMD. This will hopefully cause a huge drop in prices in the second-hand market
  • I am running a 2080 super / I7-10700k / 32 gigs ram. both overclocked, with a Oculus Rift S.

Exactly this. Also the new Reverb G2 is coming out later this year, in my opinion a VR headset with very good specs and no base station tracking required.

  • @CromsLaughterThis isn't the same VR as you thought.

Actual VR games are badly designed and adding stupid R&D products such as finger tracking, foot tracking, vive tracker, .. that require huge amount of time processing through hardware driver.

(only mocap suit should be the only solution for 100% immersion in VR games imho)

And maybe it's the fault of SteamVR too that slow that all down.
Thus, you don't need high end rig to be able to run this type of VR game of SW squadron.

I highly doubt the VR mode of this game need the installation of SteamVR, it would be a VR native support like in Crysis 2/3.

And about the spec recommendation on the game website https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/squadrons/overview/pc-system-requirements

GTX 1060 is far enough as you can see.

  • Thank you everyone!

I hadn’t  even thought of all the peripherals that eat up tons of processing power that won’t be there. Sounds like the 1660 Super is the way to go for this in VR and 1080p for everything else!

Weird recommendation, an i5 K processor for the minimum and without VR and a i7 for VR.

Something seems wrong in those req, EA haven't used us to have such CPU power for their game, even for minimum.

It would be the first game from EA that I will not be able to play it correctly, even if all is low graphics.

I have a GTX 1060 3gb and i3-6100 and I can run all latest EA games with normal graphics.

  • It will depend on what resolution of the VR Headset and how high it's refresh rate is. You'll want a video card that can drive the headset's (combined) resolution and be able to keep a minimum frame rate that matches at least the VR headset's refresh rate.
