- @SatheA I'm surprised people aren't up in arms about this, actually. Probably because there aren't that many VR players?
A-wing in VR: you are sitting on a table. You can not see what's below, but you have a clear unobstructed view front, above and to the sides.
Tie fighter in VR: you are sitting inside a cardboard box, with a hole cut in the wall in front of you. You can see through the hole, but that's it.
When it comes to situational awareness, the difference is so great it isn't even funny. It does have a couple of small windows but they're mostly useless. None the less it's still a vastly more enjoyable experience than watching it on a screen. Plus if you reset your seat position a bit further back then move forward IRL you can get pretty close to the window and still get a good field of view, and you can still lean around to peek past the angle you could see in the fixed screen view. Plus with the tracking UI you can still follow your targets even when they are behind the wall.
Honestly I love the Tie's in VR, having the 3 dimensional cockpit all around you feels awesome.
The A-Wing has great visibility, obviously. You just have to look at the ship to see that. There are however trade offs to flying an interceptor and if you look at all the ship types, and just going by visibility and view in VR, it all evens out a bit to me:
Fighters: I prefer the X-Wing over the Tie Fighter.
Bombers: I prefer the Tie Bomber over the Y-Wing
Interceptors: I prefer the A-Wing over the Tie Interceptor
Support ships: I prefer the Tie Reaper over the U-Wing
To me all ships need some tweaking in relation to the default setting, and moving up- and forward in the Tie cockpits does the trick. Got no issues with them, and I definitely wouldn’t want them any other way.
- @SatheA I play exclusively in VR and I love the TIEs, just because it's part of the immersion experience. Plus I've always loved the challenge that comes with limitations like that, makes kills all the more satisfying because I just downed a pilot with better cockpit visibility than me.
In terms of beneficial traits in VR, I'd say very minimal. The most useful thing i do with vr in TIEs are moving myself forward to have a slightly wider look around to assess my frontal surroundings and to look for capital ships after spinning around. I despise the TIEs with all my heart and I'm absolutely outraged that we can't pick sides in fleet battles.
TIE cockpit + immersive HUD + framerate issue = completely devastated situational awareness.
I'm a VR player. During a Dogfight match, the TIE/LN is my current go to Imperial ride. I'm very pleased with the performance of the TIE/LN. The TIE Fighter is competitive with all of the New Republic ships and is a lot of fun to play with. So I definitely wouldn't avoid the TIE Fighter. I'm a big fan of the TIE/LN, of all of the playable Star Wars Squadrons ships.
Tie Visibility is rubbish. Environmental and battle awareness is minimal. Compared to X-Wing and A-Wing, it's like night and day. They should add some "in-helmet" vision system that would expand visibility.
You have great visibility under the nose if you sit up and forward a bit. This is great for tracking deflection shots. You can't do the same in Rebel fighters.
