Increasing maneuverability and increasing lock times will keep you alive longer. Managing your energy will also help. Try not to get drawn into lure traps and be selective on who you attack. But yeah updates and the force will also help!
I do not advise new players to use Ion weapons in Dogfight PVP. Ion is good if you have good coordination with your team mates, but it depends on the Maps being played sometimes.
