Overheating and shutdown

Hi.

I've had Battlefront for a few days and haven't had a problem.  However, since yesterday SW-B has been making my laptop shutdown by itself.  The screen just goes black and the laptop turns off.  When I turn it back on it says Windows didn't shut down properly.

I think SW-B is overheating the laptop, even when in the main menu.  The laptop is getting very warm and hot air is coming from the vents.  It's a new laptop so shouldn't be a thermal paste issue.

Here are 2 relevant screenshots.  The Temperature one was when SW-B was running.

I've emailed PC Specialist to see if they can help but would be grateful for any advice here too.

Thanks,

Sean

Game developers test with desktops, set the requirements with desktops, and blame all kinds of ills (mostly with justification) on laptops.  Overheating is your problem to solve.  Get a cool-pad to run it on.  Blow out all vents.  Don't overheat the room you play in.

Yes, @Gorath_the_Elder is correct.  I was in the middle of saying the same thing he did, and saw he posted first lol.  A good laptop cooling pad would help a good bit, but laptops are known for heating issues, especially when running very intensive games like SW:BF.

Thanks both.  I thought those would be the replies.  I've got a cooling pad...... doesn't help ;(  ..

I've just used GeForce Experience to optimise the game.  The fan is still running at max and the laptop is quite hot but it hasn't shut down.

I never had these issues with Elite Dangerous and that's quite power hungry.  Maybe I should play that for a while to see if I have the same issue.

You used Geforce Experience to optimize your settings?  This could be part of your issue.  G.E. is horrible at optimizing games.  Back on my last GPU that was a GTX 760, it was telling me I could run Battlefield 4 on Ultra, yea right lol.  I would go in-game and change your settings to around Medium.  I currently have a GTX 970 and run at Medium with 120 FPS and it still looks amazing.  Try turning the settings down like I just said, and see if your heating issues are still there.

I've put all of the settings down to low and it's still doing it.  Takes longer to do it though.  I've opened the laptop and there was more dust on the vents than I would have expected so I've removed that.  Will let you know.

  • @Angry_Gandhi

If it takes longer to happen, this is a good sign.  Also, yea, if your fans are really dusty, this would be even a bigger issue.  Also, make sure to clear all the dust out of any heatsinks in the laptop, as this will cause CPU overheating as well.

It was the fans all along.  I haven't had the problem since.  Next time it'll be the first place I'll look. It got to a point where I couldn't even play on low settings.  Now it runs fine I've put it up to medium (I may be able to go higher) but to be honest, even low looked pretty good.

The thing that's getting on my nerves now is the bad server connection.  I've opened the ports, have a good wifi signal and low ping.  Bah!!

Look for an option in either nvidia settings or in game settings to limit your FPS. Even if you turn the graphics down your card is still trying to spit out as many frames per second as possible and this makes it work very hard.

Also make sure your fans are working properly and if you have anything overclocked, do not keep it that way....laptops cannot realistically be overclocked.
