Rain and Other Textures show in black (to the point of being unplayable)

Game looks great for a total of 1-30 seconds (seemingly random amount of time) and then rain and other textures (gusts of wind?, other flying things) go black and opaque.

Setup:

4 day old machine

Win 10 home

Ryzen 2600X

16GB Ram

Gigabyte 5700XT OC

Radeon Software Version: 20.1.3 (released 1/17/2020)

Checked this forum and others and see that there are similar problems but all the solutions point to a specific Nvidia card (1080 I think) or driver/overclocking being the main culprit.  In my case, neither of these seem to be applicable to my situation as I'm running an AMD 5700XT

Attempts at troubleshooting has yielded the following:

1) No amount of resolution or windowed/fullscreen/windowed fullscreen or in-game detail changes and combinations seem to lessen or fix the problem.

2) If I quit to main screen and then relaunch into the game, the textures come back again for another set period of time (between 1 to 30 seconds) before going black again.

3) Radeon Software Overlay (Alt-R in game) seems to be spotty at best. About 1/2 the time the overlay will not happen, and after quitting out of Jedi, sometimes I cannot bring up the radeon window at all.  Requires a force quit and relaunch to come up again.  It's almost like the process of overlaying or the potential to overlay on Jedi is causing some problem???

3) Radeon Software metrics overlay (FPS etc.) has an even lower rate of working... like maybe 5% of the time the overlay will work.

4) Other games on this very new rig setup run flawlessly, as does the Radeon software overlay in said games.

5) Removed and reinstalled game to to effect - same problem

6) Verifying game files returned nothing wrong

7) May be an unrelated issue (but may not). Game startup was at first very temperamental, going full black or display off 3 out of the first 5 times I attempted to play the game.  This has subsided and I can get into the game 9-10 times just fine.

    Hi @mewcus,

Have you tried disabling the Radeon overlay to see if this persists yet?
  • @EA_Cade, Not disabling overlay option: No difference. Black Texture problem persists.

With it on or off, I have been attempting to make sure and not activate the metric or app overlays.

    Other things I tried:

    1) Completely reinstalling AMD Radeon software (with downgrade to 19.12.2): No difference with black texture problem.

However: the instability/crashing while starting up seems to have completely cleared up.

FYI the crashes details I was getting was on the startup problem was:
LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 200] Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost.

    2) DxDiag showed nothing wrong (attached)

    3) Removed and reinstalled the game a second time (first time was through steam, second time was directly through origin): No difference

    4) Turned off Freesync: No Difference

    5) Temporarily Removed GameUserSetting.ini so that it would re-generate the defaults: No Difference

    6) Ran sfc /scannow to make sure system files were good. No problems.

This is a brand new system, brand new installs of OS, drivers and software.

I have absolutely zero problems running ANY other games (Borderlands 3, Assassins Creed: Origins, Dishonored 2, Portal 2) - for the most part running as close to 2k resolution / 120 fps / ultra settings.

Unfortunately, I am at the very end of the limited window for a steam refund on this game, and I feel like I have exhausted my options.

I wanted to list what I have tried and done, and what symptoms I am having in detail on the off chance this may help.

To say I am a little dismayed that I am not getting to enjoy all the awesomeness I have read about this game would be an understatement. I was so looking foward to it. Maybe I'll try again in 6 months. Good luck out there!!!
