So, I have done most of this, but get a slightly different problem to you.

Make a fresh install of the game(since my copy is on Steam, I re-installed the EA app just to double check that too) - Done this no difference

1. Ensure both EA and Steam overlays are disabled - Done this no difference
2. Reboot computer - Done this no difference
3. Launch the game in PANCAKE MODE(desktop only, no VR enabled for now) - Done this no difference
   
   This is where I have a different option to you. I have a gamepad and a joystick attached. So if I touch a key on the keyboard to make that the input default to the keypad, I get the grey screen. If I then press ESC on the keyboard, the screen goes away and the game loads, but offline. I can then  press 9 on the joystick to go online and the verification screen appears with pre loaded verification options that I can't change or access, so it gets stuck there.
   
   
4. ASSUME when the grey box pops up that your text cursor is automatically in the email/username box - Is already pre filled and no keyboard response
5. Type in the email associated with your EA account - Is already pre filled and no keyboard response
6. Hit "TAB" on your keyboard - goes back to the offline mode.
7. Type your password  - Is already pre filled and no keyboard response
8. Wait a moment until you hear the game try to do something - nothing happens
9. Hit the "CLOSE" button in the top right of the game  - No keyboard response other than ESC to take me back to the offline game

I have the same login issue and have had several sessions with the Chat Support team.
The last one ended with redirection to the support forum here and a report to the support team by the chat support.
I did almost everything except reinstalling the game itself.
I did relinking, EA app cache clearing, Reinstalling the EA App, and finally changing the steam profile name to be the same as my steam login and re-linking again. Nothing works. Although, after the EA app got reinstalled, the game gives up on logging much faster, so there's a plus.

I do have an AMD Ryzen system although with NVIDIA graphic card.

I have attempted that on my machine.

Somewhere along the way I managed to get 2fa code twice, however it was both too late plus haven't ever got passed the grey screen with grey box. Even after opening the re-connect option from main menu.

@EA_Illium I did a stupid test. Turned 2fa off for my account, and game... was logged in from the start. No need to insert password, no grey window to do anything.
Turned the 2fa back again AND.... back to the issues, game is offline, I get greeted by grey window with close button and the error 4975 appears back.

@fizyksaah @EA_Illium @KramerThCourier Well done Fizyk_saah! I turned 2Fa off and the game works with no issues. 

So EA have a major issues with the 2FA it appears.

Not great from a security standpoint to make everyone turn it off just to play this game.

Well, I tried that and it made something new happen! It made the game CTD . . . yay

Go to EA and click on profile. 

Use Steam to "log in"

Enter number sent to email.

Start Squadrons

Me Too,  get blank screen and can't access squadrons online.  but can access other star wars steam games.
