There is likely some software running at bootup causing this issue, as these are often security/anti-malware/antivirus programs, they may need to be disabled manually.
Perform a clean boot before starting the game can also help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 or http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-clean-boot-your-pc/
Thanks.

Thank you!
Uninstalling my current antivirus software allowed me to load and play the game without crashing.
I'm curious if there is any antivirus software you would recommend that will not crash the game.
Thanks again

You could use the built-in Windows Security of Windows 10 (or Windows Defender if you are on an older OS). It should be good enough for most cases and rarely if ever causes problems with games or other software.

Just bought the game yesterday with christmas deals was looking forward to getting back into XWing/TIE fighter, been a long time and have now spent hours over last two days just trying to get it to start.
Finally found this and a few other posts pointing at WEBROOT, being issue, which of course I use never had any issues with it in the 6+ years I have used it.
An issue that apparently keeps popping up, please tell me there is a better fix then basically disabling your security????

Why is this still not fixed?
