most connection errors are either firewall based or net routing issues, if a routing issue a VPN would work
in the case of the OP his account was restricted and refused access to the servers
Hey, so I'm having the same problem, I get to the select server part and then it says "a connection error has occurred".
I've tried it with the launcher from the SWOTOR website and the launcher from steam and got the same problem both times.
I'm just wondering how I go about checking if my account is restricted for whatever reason.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

normally with uni internet it could be a firewall issue , have you ever played on that network before ?
edit: easiest way to tell is simply tether the computer to a mobile phone and access via the gsm network not via uni wifi and see if the issue is still there - 2 years ago@proxos666
No, I've just got here and was hoping to start playing again.
It has been a few years since I last played though and the wifi I used last time was known for causing more than a few problems. - proxos6662 years agoHero+
i would tether the computer to a mobile phone and access via the gsm network not via uni wifi and see if the issue is still there
likley uni wifi firewall to be honest - 2 years ago@proxos666
Yeah it's the uni firewall, I tethered to my phone and it works now.
Any way to work around the firewall so I don't have to use up my data or is it just not possible? - proxos6662 years agoHero+
uni internet administrator would need to open the following ports on their firewall, you would need to ask them
- The TCP ports (and port ranges) you need to open: 80, 8995, 12000-12999 and 20000-30000
