Akk Dog companion unable to craft?

This is intended. Some companions have full crafting abilities, some do not. 

They talked about it somewhere, but I can't seem to find the right blog post. 

This is correct. The Akk Dog companion is unable to do crafting. The reason... well... cuz he's a dog. 

You should also note that the Akk Dog is categorized separately in the companion window.  This will help identify such limitations on future companions.

collinc2343 is right, this is intended and not a bug. They are leaving the old companions (Treek and HK-51) alone, those can still craft. But all new Cartel Market companions, like the Akk Dog, cannot be used for crafting.
