Add swtor.exe and launcher.exe into your firewall and anti-virus safe list, just incase they are causing the programs to shut down.
If that doesn't work, run a repair:
Non-Streaming launcher - Log into the launcher but don't click Play. Check for small letters "ST" in the bottom left corner. If this is NOT present, click the cog icon and then run the repair option.
Streaming launcher - If the letters "ST" is present, close the launcher, right mouse click on the game shortcut, select open file location and delete the BitRaider folder. Then start the launcher.
If your using the streaming launcher, bitraider could be locking up causing the crash. To disable it you would do the following:
NOTE this is a complete download of the game again
right mouse click on game shortcut and select open file location
open the launcher.settings file in notepad and locate the below line and edit to the below
, "PatchingMode": "{ \"swtor\": \"SSN\" }"
, "bitraider_disable": true
SAVE the changes.
Delete the BitRaider, Movie and Asset folders then start the launcher.

you said that you both are running on a wired connection. Is it into a wired router or wireless router? You said your on Windows 10, is your roommate on windows 10 as well?

It's a wired router.
He is on windows 7, but I have tried win 7 8 and 10 on my machine and all had the same error.
BTW thanks for helping.
