If you are on Ilum, then the 'level adjusted 52' means your effective level on that planet is 52. every planet does that now. When you are on a planet, you are elevl synced to 2 levels above the highest content on that planet, with stats based on the best gear available for that level, and all of your abilities. This means you still gain experience on every planet as if you were leveled for that planet. And level sync only adjust down, never up, up is for bolster in tactical flashpoints, wz and SM Ops.

I'm at level 55 and it wont allow me to level up anymore. Off to the side it says level adjusted 52? What do I do?
You need the Shadow of Revan expansion in order to rank up above level 55. Subscribers get all expansions automatically while F2P and Preferred do not.

Just subscribe for 30 days.
Look at the $15 as the cost of all the DLCs, you get everyone, including the new one thru Chapter 9.
And they will remain usable when your subscription ends.

If you're just free play, congrats, you've hit the cap! To level to 60 as others have said, you have to have access to the Shadow of Revan. The 65 cap is available once you have access to Knights of the Fallen Empire. With a month's subscription you will unlock both, and be able to continue levelling your character. Additionally it will open up many other benefits. Check out https://help.ea.com/en/article/swtor-free-to-play-faqs/ for more information on Free to Play Status.
