Launcher error 206 "Unable to retrieve patch data"

So I have I problem where when the launcher loads, it comes up with the error message "Unable to retrieve patch data. Please check network connection. (206)".

(I think) I have tried all the possibilities on the help page, network seems to all be fine, driver up to date, Firewall enabled, but this error still occurs. If required I should be able to get the TraceRoute etc., but I've not done that yet. The part I don't understand is that occasionally it will work, however only rarely, most of the time I get nowhere. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the launcher, but still no luck.

I've included a log as an example. It's not the full log, but there have been many attempts so I've just cut a section of one full attempt with only one try at logging in and put it into a notepad file.

After trying to log in the first time the error message "The login service is currently unavailable.  Please visit our forums for the latest updates on the status of this service." also appears.

To me it looks like it has something to do with the "patcher2017". At the moment I  have a .version file. I checked the link in the log, and tried replacing patcher2017 with that, and tried both at the same time but still no luck. Also, just to put more information out there, this has been happening for months, but I can't remember exactly when it started, however it seems (I may be wrong) to have gotten worse. The launcher repairer only seemed to start the launcher itself and have the same issue. I hope that's enough information!

I'm stuck, if someone could help I'd be very grateful, and I apologise if this has already been resolved and I'm blind!

The launcher is like a web browser so can be affected

Try switching DNS server to 8.8.8.8 on that system as test , note how it is set before so you can go back to those settings if you want later on.

This guide link should help test using googles DNS server , this should actually bypass Norton connect safe

It looks like it could be antivirus issue, what do you use ?

ERROR Server did not properly respond to authenticate: -134

    ESET - disable protocol filtering

Kaperskey - disable scan secure/encrypted connection

Nortons (Firewall) set to allow not auto

Only got Windows Defender... But if it is about anti-virus, could it be to do with the internet provider? Our internet provider automatically seems to scan pages with Norton and often decides there is a threat when there clearly isn't (once it blocked Google!).

Just tested it by using the link to the patchmanifest in the log. Blocked by Norton ConnectSafe.

So I allowed the website and it seemed to work fine... Going to restart my computer to check if that still works, or if I would need to manually disable it everytime, or if it was just luck!

    Potentially

If you have the ability to allow domains can you set the below to allowed

    Launchpad.swtor.com

    manifest.swtor.com

    cdn-patch.swtor.com

Okay, restarted, and hasn't worked after restart, perhaps it was just luck. I'm going to try that now, hopefully at bit of googling should let me do that! I'll let you know when I'm done.

Yes! That seemed to work. Hold on whilst I restart my machine, just to make sure it wasn't luck again.

  • That works! Thanks so much for the help, it feels good to know what the problem is!

Is there a way to do something like that without having to permanently go through the Google server, i.e. only do it when connecting through the SWTOR launcher? Or shall I keep this for now. I intend to send a request to reassess those sites to Norton ConnectSafe when I am able, so hopefully they'll end up allowing them so others don't have this problem.

    @Daetus

For now if you want to switch to the Google DNS when you play swtor and switch back to ISP after playing sounds like a reasonable workaround.

Least you have narrowed the cause now

OK, that should work fine, thanks again so much for the help1

Hopefully Norton will allow those sites eventually, then others won't have this problem.
